Arrowheadlines: The Patrick Mahomes-Aaron Rodgers debate is on

Chiefs headlines for Monday, July 1.

The latest

Former NFL quarterback: Chiefs would’ve won AFC Championship Game with Aaron Rodgers | The Kansas City Star

“The whole Top 10 is nitpicking,” Simms said on “PFT Live.” “These are all all-stars and great players, but as awesome I think Mahomes is, I think that if Aaron Rodgers was on the Chiefs in the AFC Championship Game, that they would have won that game. … These are my two favorite quarterbacks in football. It was a very tough call, but I’m still not ready to relinquish the title from Aaron Rodgers.”

Chiefs rookie Mecole Hardman is more than a football player to special needs community | The Kansas City Star

“Those kids, they don’t see me as Mecole the football guy: ‘Oh, he’s in the league,’ or, ‘He’s doing good,’” Hardman said. “They just see me as Mecole, the loving guy. They just see me for me, as myself.”

Will Chiefs revisit potential contract talks with Tyreek Hill? | ProFootballTalk

Then again, it could be better for the team from a negotiating standpoint if Hill receives a suspension in the range of four games. That would surely knock down his prior financial expectations, which may have exceeded $20 million per year — and which may have sparked the trade rumors that percolated earlier this year. If the Chiefs could buy low at a time when Hill is rebounding from weeks of fear that he’d never play again, and if the contract would contain sufficient protections in the event he crosses the line again, why wouldn’t the team take full advantage of those circumstances?

So, yes, contract talks “could potentially” happen. And the atmosphere for negotiations “could potentially” become much more favorable to the team depending upon the extent of the punishment that Hill eventually receives, if any.

NFL receiver Gehrig Dieter returns home for youth camp in South Bend | ABC 57

When Gehrig Dieter played high school football at School Field in South Bend, it looked much different than the facility that held his annual youth football camp on Saturday.

”Having a turf field at the high school,” he said, “it means a little more because this is where I played my high school games at and had a lot of success here. To have it here on my field is awesome.”

Dieter, a graduate of Washington High School and currently a wide receiver for the Kansas City Chiefs, drew around 400 kids to his old stomping grounds. Once there, they ran through drills and listened to tips from an NFL player along with local coaches they might one day play for.

Lamar Hunt’s Napa Valley estate hits the market [PHOTOS] | Kansas City Business Journal

For $19.95 million, the Napa Valley estate of late Kansas City Chiefs founder Lamar Hunt could be yours.

The mansion, and its accompanying 40 acres, is on the market for the first time.

Located in Knights Valley in Napa County, Calif., the three-bedroom, four-and-a-half-bathroom home also includes the vineyard of Cabernet Sauvignon grapes where Hunt and his wife, Norma, produced their sustainably grown wine, The Perfect Season.

Kansas City Chiefs picked to finish 11-5 by Brandon Flowers | 24/7 Sports

Flowers, who the Chiefs selected in the second round of the 2008 NFL Draft and finished his career with the Chargers after being released in 2014, predicted the Chiefs to finish 11-5, with losses to Baltimore in Week 3, Green Bay in Week 8, the Chargers in Week 11, New England in Week 14, and Chicago in Week 16. The prediction of Baltimore winning in the Chiefs’ home opener is a mild surprise, but the other losses were predicted in games most expect will be among the toughest the Chiefs play in 2019. Here’s a rundown of what Flowers said about each game.

Every NFL Team’s 2019 Breakout Player | Bleacher Report

Damien Williams is the big right-time, right-place winner.

Williams gets to serve as the top running back for a Patrick Mahomes-led Kansas City Chiefs offense after Kareem Hunt’s 2018 release. Williams received an endorsement from the coaching staff following an offseason where the team didn’t add much to the spot.

Sports radio host Kevin Kietzman out at 810-WHB after Andy Reid comments | 41 Action News

“We would like to thank Kevin for his dedicated service over the last 22 years,” Union Broadcasting President Chad Boeger said. “Kevin has been a valuable member of the Sports Radio 810 WHB team. We wish him all the best on his future endeavors and good luck moving forward.”

The move comes just days after Kietzman came under firefor remarks he made about Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid’s family and how it relates to handling discipline cases among the NFL players he coaches.

The 20 most important Jaguars for 2019 season: No 16 Chris Conley | News 4 JAX

Chris Conley signed with the Jaguars with the hope of “proving something.” In a limited role in Kansas City, the wide receiver caught five touchdowns in 2018. That equals the number Dede Westbrook led the Jaguars with last season. Conley will have an opportunity for a much larger role in Jacksonville.

NFL supplemental draft 2019: Date, what it is, how it works, eligible players, pick history | Sporting News

The NFL supplemental draft works in a way that’s actually quite simple, yet because of the format, players are rarely selected in the process. Eight players have been picked in the NFL supplemental draft over the last 10 years, including two last July. In 2019, only a few players are eligible for the supplemental draft, but none are expected to be selected.

Marquise Goodwin officially fastest in NFL, wins $1 million prize at 40 Yards of Gold competition | Yahoo! Sports

The debate is over. Marquise Goodwin is officially the fastest man in the NFL.

The San Francisco 49ers wide receiver won the inaugural 40 Yards of Gold competition in Miami on Saturday night, beating out Carolina Panthers cornerback Donte Jackson by just 0.05 seconds to bring home the $1 million prize.

Raiders’ Josh Jacobs ranked No. 21 running back in NFL by one analyst | NBC Sports

“The Alabama product is set up for success thanks to the additions the team made at wide receiver and on the offensive line in the offseason. It’s not likely that he will often face a loaded box, giving him the opportunity to make splash plays. I see most of his value coming at the goal line and in short-yardage situations.”

Giovani Bernard, Bengals ‘buying in’ with Zac Taylor | NFL.com

All signs in Cincinnati point to running back Joe Mixon continuing to establish himself as a top-tier running back in the 2019 season.

Still, with Zac Taylor taking over the coaching reins and establishing a more versatile attack, the often-overlooked Giovanni Bernard clearly still has a role within the Bengals offense and a vital one at that.

”I’ve always been the type of guy when my opportunity arises is to go out and play, play hard, play for your team,” Bernard said via the team website. “I think that’s the biggest thing. We have to play for each other. It’s not about the stats, it’s not about how many plays I get. I just want to go out there when my number is called and make the play.”

Cobb: Packers an ‘ex-girlfriend that broke up with you’ | NFL.com

“It’s like the ex-girlfriend that broke up with you,” Cobb said. “When you see her five years later, you hope you’re in a better situation than you were before -- married, with kids, and you’re able to say, ‘Yeah, I did better without you.’”

NFL not the only American sport moving into the London market | Pro Football Talk

The NFL is heading into its 13th year of playing regular-season games in London, and the league is showing no sign of slowing down. But it’s getting increased competition.

This weekend the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox played two games in London, the first time Major League Baseball has played in Europe. MLB’s entrée into the London market means all four major American sports leagues have now played regular-season games there; the NHL played two games there in 2007 while the NBA has played a game there annually since 2013.
