Packers-Vikings Week 2 Fantasy Starts/Sits: MVS could eat against depleted secondary

The Vikings will be short on corners, while the Packers D looks to take additional steps forward.

Despite the Packers picking up a win in their Week 1 matchup against the Bears, the fantasy scoring was fairly low on both sides of the ball. This week’s game could provide a similar difficulty of play.

The Minnesota Vikings appear determined to run the ball a lot in their new Gary Kubiak offense. Kirk Cousins only threw the ball 10 times in their win against the Falcons, but they still managed to control the game against a Falcons team that struggled mightily to get going.

If the Packers’ defense (the Big Cheese) from Week 1 continues its upward trajectory, the fantasy starts are going to be very hit or miss. Like they did with the Bears, the Packers might see their best chance to win against the Vikings is to make their quarterback beat them.

Starts

Marquez Valdes-Scantling, WR

MVS should be a solid flex start for you, with a potential WR2 ceiling. Rodgers connected with MVS on a deep shot last week, but he also received more targets (six) than Geronimo Allison — who logged zero targets. In his last three games — dating back to last season — MVS has logged nine, eight, and six targets. Xavier Rhodes will likely be the corner to shadow Davante Adams, but that leaves perennial pass-interference call Trae Waynes to handle MVS. If MVS wants to prove he’s the second best WR on this roster, he has to show up against the Vikings.

Additionally, Mackensie Alexander was listed as OUT on the final Vikings injury report and Mike Hughes was listed as DOUBTFUL, so the secondary looks slim.

Packers Defense

A little bit of a gamble, but why not have a little faith? Last week, the top Vikings receiver, Adam Thielen, logged 43 of Cousins’ 98 air yards over the course of the game. The Vikings purposefully wanted to churn out yards on the ground and control the clock, so despite them scoring 28 points, there’s a good chance this fantasy defense doesn’t get gashed by yardage totals. The Packers also finally appear to have two safeties that can provide run support and as a whole the defense finished fourth in pass DVOA last week.

Dalvin Cook, RB

A little obvious, and I expect the Packers to key in on the run game, but the name of the game in fantasy can often be Volume. The Vikings will continue to give Cook volume in their run-heavy scheme and Cook looks as explosive as he did at Florida State. Cook secured 21 carries last week and got two of the 10 passing targets thrown his way.

Sits

Geronimo Allison, WR

Despite the Vikings being thin at corner depth, I’m not trusting Allison to be a heavy fantasy option. He could be the player who benefits the most from the Vikings’ injuries, but if you have another flex option, I would exercise that until I see some more targets float Allison’s way.

Jimmy Graham, TE

Graham did catch a toss-up touchdown last week and you might think that means it’s jump-ball time for the former Seahawks TE. However, it might be more likely that that fantasy boost was by chance. On that play, Rodgers tried to catch the Bears with 12 men on the field (there was), but it wasn’t called and he had to improvise. That close to the red zone, I like Aaron Jones or Adams’ odds to be the players getting their numbers called.
