The New England Patriots have one of the deepest rosters in all of football, but that does not mean the team will not look at potential outside reinforcements — and be it only for an emergency scenario. Just earlier this week, the team therefore brought in offensive lineman Caleb Benenoch for a free agency workout. Benenoch is not the only player to visit Foxborough, however, as the Houston Chronicle’s Aaron Wilson reported.

Four other players worked out for the Patriots this week. Let’s take a look at them.

DT Carl Davis

The Patriots have a proud history of turning former Cleveland Browns into contributors — just think Josh Gordon, Jason McCourty, Jamie Collins Sr. and Danny Shelton. Carl Davis could get the chance to join this group if signed by the Patriots at one point. The former Baltimore Ravens third-round draft pick certainly has the experience to turn into a possible emergency contributor: over his four seasons in the NFL, the 27-year-old appeared in 33 games. However, he failed to carve out a role in Cleveland and was let go after only one season of marginal playing time.

DT Willie Henry Jr.

Like Davis, Willie Henry entered the NFL with the Baltimore Ravens: the team selected him in the fourth round of the 2016 draft. Over his next three years with the team, the 6-foot-3, 290-pound interior defender appeared in 17 games as a rotational interior pass rusher and registered a combined 4.5 sacks. Henry, who finished both his 2016 and his 2018 campaigns on injured reserve, was let go during this year’s roster cutdowns after a mostly disappointing preseason performance.

SS Josh Jones

A second-round pick in 2017, Josh Jones was a part-time starter at strong safety during his two seasons with the Green Bay Packers. Despite playing in a combined 29 games, however, he struggled to carve out a consistent role on defense and was reportedly requesting a release or trade during the 2019 offseason. It took until late August for Jones to be let go, when the Packers released him with a non-football illness designation. He has been on the open market ever since, but undoubtably brings considerable talent to the table.

SS Adarius Pickett

After going undrafted earlier this year, Adarius Pickett joined the Los Angeles Chargers following a tryout during rookie minicamp. The UCLA product, who lacks athletic skill set scouts are looking for at the next level, went on to see considerable preseason snaps as a strong safety/free safety/linebacker/slot corner hybrid but failed to earn a spot on the Chargers’ 53-man roster despite his versatility. Pickett was let go during roster cutdowns and remained on the open market since. He appears to be a practice squad option at best.
