2019 Senior Bowl: Day three news and notes

Catching up with the word coming out of Mobile

Day two of the Senior Bowl practices met with rough weather. Because of this, some of the media coverage was hindered, but there was still plenty to follow.

On day three, it was more of the same, which is ok because more Senior Bowl is never a bad thing.

Let’s take a look at just a few news and notes from the Reese’s Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama.

LOCKED ON BUCS IN MOBILE!

Ok, not really. But it’s great to see show favorite Carmen Vitali and more recent friend Paige Dimakos living it up on site for the festivities.

At the Locked on Bucs podcast we brought fans of the team as many angles as possible to cover the hiring of Bruce Arians.

In the series, Paige joined us for an amazing episode giving us an insider look detailing her close relationship with the Arians family.

Later on, Carmen made her first appearance on the show this off-season to give us details about the buzz coming from inside Buccaneers head quarters. She even took the time to answer a couple of listener voicemails!

If you missed either installment go ahead and check them out when you have time. Once you do, you’ll know exactly why we were happy to see them standing tall at the Senior Bowl.

AWARDS FROM THE NOTEBOOK

If you’re familiar with Bucky Brooks and his Scout’s Notebook then the title makes sense.

Brooks handed out some awards following his observations in Mobile, and there were some familiar names on the list.

Montez Sweat is someone we talked about earlier in the week, and names like Rock Ya-Sin are guys you’ll be hearing about again when Bucs Nation gets into its 40-Prospects in 40-Days series. All leading up to the NFL Draft!

As for the others, Drew Lock is a first-round quarterback as we stand today. Anything can happen of course, but I think it’s safe to say Lock won’t be in Tampa anytime in the near future.

Andre Dillard is a name Bucs fans could see again though. Putting down solid tape at Senior Bowl practices is a great step for him to try and push his way up draft boards.

Up to this point, Dillard has landed early on some mock drafts, and outside the first round on some others.

My money is on a day two selection for him, but we still have a lot of time left to see how things shake out.

If Tampa Bay doesn’t go offensive line in round one, then they may address it on day two. If Dillard is sitting there, this may be Bucs fans’ first shot at getting a good look at him against other potential NFL talent and coaching.

Deebo Samuel is an interesting prospect, and represents the realization of something a lot of people don’t want for the Bucs; the departure of Adam Humphries.

Humphries has done pretty well for himself as a slot receiver since joining the Bucs as an undrafted free-agent out of Clemson.

His contract is up, and if Humphries leaves for greener pastures, Samuel is one guy Jason Licht could target - along with Clemson’s own Hunter Renfrow- to replace him.

I’m seeing Samuel projected as high as a second-round pick, and just feel like it’s a little high to draft any receivers this year for the Bucs.

No matter where Samuel lands, he’s going to have a chance to make an early contribution.

THE FUTURE IS NOW

At least one organization is in Mobile this week thinking about the future beyond 2019. With two more pro football organizations opening up this year and next, football prospects who don’t find an early home in the NFL are going to have options.

I’m sure there are American Alliance of Football reps there as well, even though they’re getting ready to kick-off their first season in February.

The opportunity to play professional football is great. We’ll see if either or these new leagues can stick, but it’s safe to say they’re invested. XFL doesn’t even start their first season until 2020.

SORTING THROUGH THE COVERAGE

There’s a ton of coverage coming out of the Senior Bowl practices. Twitter is obviously a great stream of information. But, if you’re asking me my favorite this year, it’s easily been The Draft Network.

Bucs fans are familiar with Trevor Sikkema, but he’s only one of the great personalities appearing in the tweets and videos giving all of their followers some of the best analysis and information around.

For those who can’t glue to NFL Network throughout the day, this site has been on point for those trying to stay up to the minute.

Pretty solid rookie performance for them, and there’s more to come from the NFL Combine later next month!
