Rumor: Broncos/Fangio doing their homework on QB Drew Lock

The Broncos love them some Lock.

The rumors connecting the Broncos to quarterback prospect have been piling up recently and we have yet another to add to that list. This one coming from someone connected to Missouri where Lock played his college ball and a longtime NFL veteran who played for newly hired Broncos Head Coach, Vic Fangio.

According to Brian Neuner, the Denver Broncos and Head Coach Vic Fangio are doing their homework on quarterback, Drew Lock, and have talked to NFL veteran Justin Smith about Lock.

Heuner who I am assuming is getting this information from Justin Smith, says that Fangio reached out to Smith about Lock and asked how he felt about the former Missouri quarterback. Smith, who is also a Missouri grad and played for Fangio in San Francisco apparently told him that he believes Lock is the best quarterback in the draft. Obviously, there is some likely bias here, but Fangio apparently trusts Smith’s opinion enough to ask.

As I said, Smith who played 14 seasons in the NFL and totaled 880 tackles, 87 sacks, and 17 forced fumbles during his career finished out his career playing for Fangio. From the beginning of the 2011 season to the end of the 2014 season, Fangio served as the San Francisco 49ers Defensive Coordinator, so the two obviously built a relationship during that time.

I know the credibility here isn’t what you want, but It makes sense for it to happen. Smith obviously is still following Missouri football and it makes sense that Fangio would reach out to one of his former players about the quarterback the Broncos are interested in and one Smith knows a bit about.

As I said earlier in the article, the Broncos interest in Lock has been well documented and they do desperately need a young quarterback to develop and hopefully be their future at the position.

I think as of right now, it is safe to pencil in Lock as the Broncos first-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. Would 10(or earlier) be too early to select Lock? Well, according to Benjamin Allbright, NFL people at the Senior Bowl believe Lock will go in the top 10 of the 2019 NFL Draft. Allbright was also one of(if not the first) to begin the Lock to Denver conversation as well.

The Broncos have been fairly obvious in the past from their past three Head Coaches and their first-round picks(Bolles and Lynch) so all this evidence stacking up is noteworthy. I know some will throw the “smokescreen” card around but, I think their interest in Lock is genuine.

I am liking what I saw from Lock this week at the Senior Bowl and he possesses all the “uncoachable” traits scouts, coaches, and GM’s look for in a prospect. He needs some refining obviously, but that is why the Broncos hired Rich Scangarello to be their Offensive Coordinator/Quarterback developer. A move/hiring that screamed “we are drafting Drew Lock” to me personally.

It is rumor season and I know some of you will hate this, but the evidence is piling up between the Broncos and Missouri quarterback prospect, Drew Lock.
