Gonzalez, who played for the Chiefs from 1997 through 2008, and then spent five years with the Atlanta Falcons until his retirement after the 2013 season, is the NFL’s all-time leader in receiving yards among tight ends with 15,127 yards over his 17-year career.
He was a six-time All-Pro and was selected to 14 Pro Bowls. Until two weeks ago — when Travis Kelce broke his record against the Seattle Seahawks — he held the Chiefs franchise record for receiving yards for a tight end.
Less than a month ago, he was inducted into the Chiefs Hall of Fame. He is in his first year of eligibility for the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
As one of 15 modern-era finalists, Gonzalez will face one final hurdle before being named to the Hall in 2019. The 48-person selection committee — composed of media representatives from each NFL market and 16 at-large members — will meet the Saturday before the Super Bowl to consider, discuss and vote on each finalist. The committee will select between four and eight individuals for enshrinement, each of whom must receive at least 80 percent of the committee’s vote.
The 2019 Hall of Fame class will be announced the night before the Super Bowl.
