Chiefs headlines for Thursday, May 2.

Charles’ one day-contract to retire with his original team is an honor bestowed only on franchise greats, and he’s a slam dunk for the Ring of Honor. Entry into the Pro Football Hall of Fame is a longer conversation, and one that likely comes down to the assessment of Charles’ peak years and whether there were enough to gain entry into the game’s most exclusive club.
AFC West draft grades: Broncos shine; Raiders surprise | NFL
CHIEFS: B-
[Mecole] Hardman fills a glaring need given the uncertainty surrounding Tyreek Hill’s future in the NFL. Hardman is raw, but he has the field-stretching speed Kansas City is going to need. Zierlein wrote in his scouting report that Hardman “could develop into a lesser version of Tyreek Hill with his playmaking potential after the catch, on deep balls and as a returner.” Thornhill can play corner or safety, and the Chiefs will be able to move him all over the field, giving them a pair feisty ballhawks with the Honey Badger in tow. Saunders is one of our favorite players in the draft -- the 324-pound man does a mean backflip -- and should fit nicely into Steve Spagnuolo’s rotation up front.
NFL Draft Day 2 Picks Who Will Become Stars by Season’s End | Bleacher Report
WR Mecole Hardman, Kansas City Chiefs
Playing with quarterback Patrick Mahomes, Hardman is a perfect fit in the Chiefs offense. He won’t be asked to do everything at receiver. Instead, he’ll make splash plays down the field and keep safeties away from the line of scrimmage. If Hill doesn’t play in 2019, expect Hardman to produce at a high level right away.

2019 NFL Draft: Five biggest instant impact rookies based on talent, fit and situation | CBS Sports
Jerry Tillery, DT, Chargers
He was my No. 4 defensive tackle -- behind Oliver, Quinnen Williams, and Jeffery Simmons -- and No. 7 overall prospect in the entire class. Because he’s so stellar athletically and has long, active hands, his height isn’t an issue in the leverage battle very often. Why? Offensive linemen can’t get their hands into his chest and keep them there.
Tillery is bound to eat immediately in Los Angeles. My pre-draft comparison for him was Chris Jones.

Ex-NFL WR Believes This Patriots Newcomer Was ‘Biggest Steal Of Draft’ | NESN
“The biggest steal? The New England Patriots. Third-round pick Damien Harris, running back out of ‘Bama,” Burleson said. “Believe he led the team in rushing last year at over 1,000 yards. The fact that he averaged just over six yards per touch — the man gets busy. Loves the physical contact, can do it all.”
Marshawn Lynch would return to Oakland Raiders if needed | NFL
Veteran running back Marshawn Lynch would return to the Raiders if the team wanted to bring him back, according to a person familiar with Lynch’s thinking. The Oakland native, 33, would only return to the NFL to play for the Raiders, according to that person.
Source: Martin likely to Raiders after Crowell loss | ESPN
The Oakland Raiders are expected to re-sign veteran running back Doug Martin, a source confirmed to ESPN’s Paul Gutierrez on Wednesday.
Martin’s return comes after Raiders running back Isaiah Crowell tore his Achilles tendon during a workout with the team Tuesday and was ruled out for the season, sources told ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Wednesday morning.

Ex-Bears kicker warns Gould of Chicago return | ESPN
“I’ve always said it to Robbie, be careful what you wish for sometimes, because it’s not easy to kick in Chicago,” Butler said on ESPN 1000’s Waddle and Silvy Show on Tuesday. “It’s certainly not easy to kick in San Francisco, but he’s found a situation out there where he’s been as good as there is. Can you duplicate that by coming back to Chicago? I don’t know. ... It’s a scary thing to mess with your legacy.”

Report: NFL not expected to take action on Tyreek Hill “in the very near future”
GARAFOLO: “My understanding is that for the time being that’s going to be enough for the league, and the team and all parties involved as far as what they should do in the immediate future while they continue to gather information,” Garafolo reported on Up to the Minute. “I know people have been talking about the possibility of the commissioner’s exempt list at least by the end of the week. That’s usually something they use when there is more of a pressing thing going on, let’s say the start of the season or the preseason or one of those things.
Report: Chris Jones has not been present at Chiefs offseason workouts
The Chiefs defensive lineman is entering the final year of his rookie contract and is likely due for an extension.
On Wednesday, the Kansas City Chiefs confirmed the one-day contract for running back Jamaal Charles, so that he may retire from the game of pro football as a member of the organization.
And if that wasn’t good enough, moments later, the Chiefs released this video via their official Twitter account.

Tyrann Mathieu responds to Keenan Allen, talks Patrick Mahomes, Tyreek Hill and barbecue
And speaking of that, earlier this week, Chargers wide receiver Keenan Allen made light of the Chiefs defensive backs room. Mathieu did not back down in responding to Allen.
“I think the last three years, the Chiefs have pretty much won the AFC West,” Mathieu said. “I think a lot of receivers feel that way. I think we should really get these guys a reality show, let them just talk about their feelings and emotions, they’re pretty much all over the place. He’ll have his chance to go against us and to play against us and quite honestly, we won’t forget things the he’s done, so it’s kind of easy for receivers to talk a lot of smack. They get 160 targets a year, so it’s easy to catch 90 balls. He’s a pretty good player, he does well for his offense, but yeah. I’ll just leave it at that.”
