There’s a new cornerback in town, we think.
The NFL Draft may be over, but as Stephen Jones likes to say, roster construction is something that takes place 24/7/365.
We are officially past the point where free agents count against the compensatory formula, so now is the time where players who are still on the open market are starting to find homes with NFL teams. Stephen Jones hinted at this recently and it appears that the Cowboys are in fact staying busy.
The Cowboys may have added two cornerbacks during the draft, but the secondary as a whole is still a position of concern for them. It makes sense that they would continue to re-tool it.
The Cowboys are, apparently, signing free agent cornerback Daryl Worley
Shortly before the 2020 NFL Draft, the Cowboys were connected to free agent cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick. This proved that the team clearly was keeping tabs on the open market, like they should be doing, and on Tuesday night word broke that they did indeed land a corner - Daryl Worley. The “word” came from Daryl Worley himself.
The Carolina Panthers drafted Worley in the third round of the 2016 NFL Draft, but he has spent the last two seasons with the Oakland Raiders. He is obviously still young and the Cowboys are clearly looking for a veteran they can trust, it seems that he fits that bill.
The Cowboys did not draft a safety last week, but Mike McCarthy intimated in the team’s post-draft press conference that they might have a veteran player on their roster that could slide over and play the position. Many have assumed that he was talking about Chidobe Awuzie, and the reality is that if Chido were being taken out of the cornerback group that having another option would be nice even with two rookies people are excited about.
Worley has had exactly one interception in three of his four seasons (he had two in 2017). He isn’t regarded too highly in any particular statistic, but the Cowboys seem to like what he offers.
