Pundit power rankings for Week 3: Chiefs break the top five

The national writers gave the Chiefs another boost following another road win against the Steelers

National pundits took note when the Kansas City Chiefs knocked off the Pittsburgh Steelers on the road for the first time since 1986, moving the Chiefs up to the third spot in our aggregated power rankings, and dropping the Steelers out of the top 10.

Here's what the pundits had to say about the Chiefs this week:

ESPN (3rd from 6th)

Patrick Mahomes became the youngest quarterback in NFL history to throw six touchdown passes in a game (he turned 23 on Monday), and his 10 touchdowns are the most through a team's first two games of a season in league history. Up next are the 49ers, who have yet to pick off a pass this season and just allowed Matthew Stafford to throw three touchdowns.

NFL.com (Elliot Harrison - 4th from 11th)

Guess nobody's questioning Andy Reid's thinking anymore. Patrick Mahomes is the NFL's newest bona fide star, through two weeks anyway. In a league brimming with overreaction, people are already talking up the Chiefs as Super Bowl participants (please disregard, for a moment, the fact that the defense gave up 37 points on Sunday). Patrick Mahomes threw six touchdowns in Pittsburgh ... OK, so perhaps some things are worth overreacting to, like a sophomore quarterback who has a stat line that looks like a line item from Tecmo Super Bowl. Seven Chiefs players have already scored receiving touchdowns this year, the same number as all of last year.

SBNation (Rebecca Toback - 3rd from 7th)

The Chiefs have had some hot starts in recent seasons; they were 5-0 to start last season and 7-2 to start 2016. Once again, they’re off to a great start, thanks in large part to Patrick Mahomes, who has thrown 10 touchdown passes in the last two weeks and is perfectly using the Chiefs’ offensive weapons. Seven different Chiefs players caught passes on Sunday and three had 90-plus receiving yards.

Sporting News (Vinnie Iyer - 3rd from 8th)

The defense has been atrocious for two weeks, but when the Chiefs are playing efficient with a big-play offense like they are with Patrick Mahomes, it doesn’t matter as much. We learned last year that second-year QBs in big-time offenses can win championships.

Yahoo! Sports (Frank Schwab - 4th from 7th)

Everything that has been said about Patrick Mahomes is well deserved, but let’s also give some credit to Andy Reid. The offensive coordinators change in Kansas City but the offense always looks fantastic. Mahomes is the first quarterback in NFL history with 10 touchdowns and no interceptions in his first two games. Credit Mahomes, who looks like a sure-fire superstar. But don’t forget Reid either.

CBS Sports (Pete Prisco - 3rd from 8th)

Patrick Mahomes is on fire. He has to be, too, because the Chiefs defense isn't very good.

Among the pundits, NFL.com’s Elliott Harrison gave the Chiefs the biggest boost, bringing them up seven spots from last week. But all of them put the Chiefs at third or fourth in their rankings.

The pundits are starting to think the Cincinnati Bengals could be for real. The two polls moved them up at least 10 spots, and their overall position improved by nine. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers got some more love, too, showing an overall improvement of nine, with four of the six rankings moving them up double digits.

The scribes agree the Texans are headed down, but disagree a lot on how much. They fell 11 spots overall — the biggest drop of the week — ranging from down two spots to down eleven.

Now the Chiefs come back to Arrowhead for the home opener against the San Francisco 49ers. We’ll see what the pundits all have to say next Tuesday.

Don’t forget! Wednesday on Arrowhead Pride, we’ll start combining what the pundits say with what the number-crunchers say — to give you True Power Rankings!
