Former 2015 first-round pick Breshad Perriman has finally landed another job in the NFL. After working out for five teams — Bills, Jets, Giants, Eagles, and Redskins — Perriman has agreed to a contract with Washington, per Adam Schefter.
The Redskins have a need at wide receiver. They have placed Trey Quinn and Cam Sims on injured reserve, and although Paul Richardson played in week two, he is dealing with an AC joint injury. Washington also signed wide receiver Michael Floyd, per Ian Rapoport.
As for the addition of Perriman, he could bring a different element to the Redskins’ new-look offense. He has exceptional speed and rare size, but his unrefined route running and inconsistent hands are certainly a concern. Throughout his time in Baltimore, Perriman struggled with drops, and it ultimately led to his release.
He is now the only first-round pick in franchise history to be released before his rookie contract expired. Perriman knew he was fighting an uphill battle to make the roster entering training camp.
He put together a solid training camp and preseason, but it did not start the way many had hoped. Perriman dropped the ball on his first target of the 2018 preseason, and it was intercepted. After his first target, he did not record a single drop and put together a solid preseason performance. Perriman finished with 11 receptions for 136 yards and a touchdown, including a 32-yard touchdown.
Perriman may go down as one of the biggest busts in franchise history, but head coach John Harbaugh thinks a change of scenery could bode well for the former UCF wide receiver.
“To me, that’s the thing that I think he’s excited about and I’m excited about for him. You get a chance to get a fresh start, a healthy start. He had his best camp, because he was in camp and played well [and was] very productive in the games and in practice,” Harbaugh said after the Ravens released Perriman. “I’m hopeful for him. I want to see him do well. You become friends with these guys, and I want to see them be successful.”
