Tight ends named Tyler are dropping like flies in Cincinnati.
The Bengals just signed tight end Matt Lengel, and now we know why.
Tight end Tyler Kroft was spotted with a walking boot and scooter before Wednesday’s practice, a good sign he’s out this week when the Bengals play the Steelers.

Kroft got banged up in Sunday’s win over the Miami Dolphins. Kroft suffered a foot injury that knocked him out of the game briefly before being listed as questionable to return. He did eventually return but finished with just 24 snaps on the day and didn’t catch a pass.
If Kroft is going to miss time, it would make sense to sign another tight end, especially since third-stringer Mason Schreck is still raw and inexperienced, and Uzomah isn’t the most reliable pass-catcher either. Tight ends were only targeted three times in the passing game in the Bengals’ Week 5 win. This follows tight end Tyler Eifert being placed on Injured/Reserve with an ankle injury that he’s already had surgery on. He’s expected to miss the rest of the season.
The Bengals do have h-back Jordan Franks on the practice squad, but he’s also a very raw player who needs a lot of work before he’s ready to contribute as a tight end in the NFL.
We’ll see if Kroft takes the field at all for practice later today, but it sounds unlikely. The Bengals host the Steelers on Sunday before traveling to Kansas City for Sunday Night Football in Week 7. They then host the Buccaneers in Week 8 before a Week 9 bye. Hopefully Kroft is able to recover quickly.
