Build The Team: CFB Standouts Week 12

A QB option, some prolific WRs, and some physical safeties made their marks this week

Offense

Andy Isabella, WR
School: Massachusetts | Conference: Mid American
College Experience: Senior | Age: 22?
Height / Weight: 5-10 / 190 lbs

Andy Isabella is the leader in receiving yards in the FBS. Isabella has amassed 1,697 yards already on the season. He is a legitimate receiver and there should be no question about his abilities to play short, intermediate, long, catch and run. Yes, he plays for Massachusetts in the Mid American conference but he has consistently produced all year long against all levels of defense and this performance against Georgia, against one of the best cornerbacks in the nation deserves your attention. UMASS was blown out of course by Georgia but Isabella dissected Georgia’s secondary and caught 15 passes for 219 yards and 2 TDs. He is going to be a dangerous slot option in the NFL. You’re going to hear a lot about him in the offseason.

Ryan Finley, QB
School: NC State | Conference: ACC
College Experience: RS Senior | Age: 23?
Height / Weight: 6-4 / 212 lbs

Ryan Finley is/was regarded as a potential high right pick last year (before he decided to return to school) and this year. So what gives? I’m tempted to say Finley hasn’t lived up to the expectations placed on him by those with loud voices in the media. But that sentiment would be in spite of career numbers he has put up this year. I think Finley is a fine developmental QB but I don’t think he is a franchise guy. That is fine, just because you may not be regarded as a franchise QB doesn’t mean that you can have a productive NFL career. The elephant in the room with Finley is how he has performed against top defenses. Namely Clemson and Boston College this year. It hasn’t been pretty and he’ll have to answer questions about those and ultimately prove people wrong including me. Finley does have his moments though as this past week against Louisville was no exception. He decimated a lowly Cardinals team and threw 26/36 for 316 yards and 4 TDs. It will be interesting to see where Finley goes in the draft hopefully we will find out a bit more during the Senior Bowl.

Joshua Kelley, RB
School: UCLA | Conference: PAC 12
College Experience: Senior | Age: 22?
Height / Weight: 5-11 / 204 lbs

If you never heard of Joshua Kelley its alright I hadn’t either until this week. This is Kelley’s first year as a starter after transferring from UC Davis. He cemented himself in history in a couple different ways. He is the newest UCLA running back to rush for over 1,000 yards in the season since Paul Perkins did it in 2015. He also set the record for rushing yards by either team in the storied UCLA/USC rivalry. UCLA took this round and Kelley carried them all game long. He finished this game with 40 carries for 289 yards and 2 TDs. If Kelley enters the draft he is sure to be a late round flyer if he is drafted at all. His athletic testing will play a large part in that.

Sean Modster, WR
School: Boise State | Conference: Mountain West
College Experience: Senior | Age: 22?
Height / Weight: 5-11 / 189 lbs

In the first article of this series this year I wrote about A.J. Richardson largely due to a spectacular catch and his reliability as a target to Brett Rypien. Now his running mate, Sean Modster, gets the spotlight as he exploded for 3 TDs against New Mexico. Modster has 9 games this season where he’s caught 4 or more passes. He is a security blanket for Boise State and he was the go to receiver for them this past weekend. Modster took advantage of the New Mexico defense on short intermediate and deep routes and posted a stat line of 9 catches for 129 yards and 3 TDs. Boise State has one more game left in the regular season next week and if Modster can produce like he did this week he’ll have a chance of going over 1,000 receiving yards for the season which will no doubt help him in his journey to the NFL.

James Proche, WR
School: SMU | Conference: AAC
College Experience: RS Junior | Age: 21?
Height / Weight: 5-11 / 190 lbs

This is the 3rd time I’ve mentioned James Proche in this series (once I featured him, the second time I mentioned him when I wrote about Trey Quinn). Hopefully the 3rd time is the charm and you guys will see just legit he is. Like his former teammate Quinn, Proche has excellent route running and receiving ability. I actually like Proche a bit better than Quinn for his athleticism and spectacular catch ability. He is a weapon that can be used all over the field in a creative spread offense. Guys like this are the heart of your WR core. They aren’t the big flashy WR1 who can jump out of the stadium they just do the little things well and can come up with the boring but essential catches but can also get you out of a jam with something special. If Proche decides to come out this year he should be a good value as a 4th or 5th round pick. He finished this game against Memphis with 12 catches for 134 yards and 2 TDs.

Defense

Keith Washington, CB
School: West Virginia | Conference: BIG 12
College Experience: Junior | Age: 21?
Height / Weight: 6-0 / 180 lbs

If you never heard of Keith Washington that’s ok. He’s featured this week in part because of a spectacular interception but also because of the 3 pass breakups he had against Oklahoma State’s high powered passing game. Looking at the stat sheet it would appear Washington is a bit of a hot and cold player. His production comes in waves. When it happens though its fun to watch. Washington actually started his career with Michigan but he didn’t like the playing time he was getting in Ann Arbor and transferred to a junior college before transferring again to West Virginia this season. Playing time was almost an issue again for him this year but Washington has shown that he’s one of WVU’s best cover corners. Washington may not come out this year as he has a year of eligibility left and it is only his first year as a starter but if he did decide to declare he would be an interesting late round flyer to take at the CB position.

Mike Edwards, S
School: Kentucky | Conference: SEC
College Experience: Senior | Age: 22?
Height / Weight: 6-0 / 200 lbs

Mike Edwards is probably the best safety prospect that no one is talking about yet. He’s had three seasons of great production and he’s looking to finish this year on a high note. He got a bit closer to that goal this past weekend against Middle Tennessee State. Edwards impacted the game in several ways. He finished with 12 tackles (2 TFLs), a pick 6, and a forced fumble. Edwards is a tad undersized and because of all his tackle production and ability to close and pursue some will want to stamp him as a SS in the NFL. I really view him as a hybrid S because his coverage skills are not lacking its worth noting that he has 2 INTs this season and 6 passes defended and Kentucky lets him drop back deep and cover as well. He is regarded as a smart player who ‘gets it’ more than some of his peers. With the trade for HaHa Clinton-Dix the Redskins are likely not in the market for a 3rd safety unless their feelings about HaHa or Monte Nicholson change. If that happens though they should take a long look at Edwards in the 3rd round or so.

Johnathan Abram, S
School: Mississippi State | Conference: SEC
College Experience: Senior | Age: 22?
Height / Weight: 6-0 / 215 lbs

It’s weird when a well known player has a good game and its hard to find clips on Twitter and the game on YouTube. Oh well, you guys get the Senior Day reel (look for #38). Johnathan Abram is another top safety who play in different areas of the field. You’ll notice his physicality and tackle production and he should fit right in as a box safety or safety / linebacker hybrid. Abram has good movement skills and is even better and reading and diagnosing plays. He can get to the ball before its target and blow a play up. He is also a threat as a blitzer and he isn't too bad in coverage either. We should be able to learn more about him in the Senior Bowl in a few months. Abram finished this game against Arkansas with 12 tackles (3.5 TFLs), 1.5 sacks, 1 FF, and 1 FR.

Blake Cashman, LB
School: Minnesota | Conference: BIG 10
College Experience: Senior | Age: 22?
Height / Weight: 6-2 / 235 lbs

As with Abram above you guys get the Senior Day reel (sorry, plenty of other Cashman highlights on Twitter though). What’s interesting about Cashman is that on some sites he is listed as a LB/DB. He definitely is not a DB but that really speaks to his athleticism. You wont be able to tell exactly from the reel but Cashman can really close space quickly and is a sideline to sideline linebacker as well as a penetrating one. This is a career year for Cashman as he already has over 100 tackles on the season including 15 TFLs. He knows how to anticipate a play and break it up and if the Redskins are considering adding more athleticism to the ILB position and pushing Mason Foster, Cashman would be a good later round option to consider. Cashman reminds me a lot of Matt Milano coming out of Boston College who is now on the Bills. Cashman finished this game against Northwestern with 20 tackles (2.5 TFLs), a sack, and one pass defended.

Reggie Walker, EDGE
School: Kansas State | Conference: BIG 12
College Experience: RS Junior | Age: 21?
Height / Weight: 6-2 / 246 lbs

Walker is just the latest EDGE prospect to come out of a Kansas State program that has been quietly producing them at the NFL level the past few seasons. Walker will potentially be hoping to join his former teammates Jordan Willis and Elijah Lee in the NFL. Walker’s production and tape is solid enough where I think he can go as high as the 3rd round or so. A lot will depend on his athletic test but we’ll see. Walker had a significant role is containing an explosive Texas Tech offense this past weekend by constantly pressuring their QB and outright embarrassing their LT at times. He’s had a good season thus far and could potentially end the season next weekend with double digit sacks. Walker finished this game against Texas Tech with 6 tackles (3 TFLs), 2 sacks, and 2 FFs.
