Chargers place Corey Liuget on IR; claim T.Y. McGill off waivers

The Chargers announced they have placed their starting defensive tackle Corey Liuget on the reserve-injured list cutting his 2018 season short after sustaining a knee injury last week against the Denver Broncos. After serving a suspension that cost him the first four weeks of the season, Liuget played six games and had 9 tackles, 5 tackles for a loss, 1.5 sacks, and fumble recovery that he took for 24 yards in Oakland. During the offseason Liuget agreed to restructure his contract that would make him a free agent in 2020 but with an upcoming cap hit of $9.5M in 2019 it seems his future with the Chargers could be in question.

In a corresponding move, the team claimed defensive tackle T.Y. McGill off waivers and added him to the 53 man roster. This is McGill’s second stint with the Chargers this year after being with the team for the first four weeks of the season while Liuget served his suspension. After cutting McGill, the Philadelphia Eagles picked him up and T.Y. played 30 snaps and recorded three tackles. McGill was recently cut by the Eagles to make room to activate Tim Jernigan. Head Coach Anthony Lynn said Darius Philon will be the new starter while the third round pick Justin Jones serves as a backup; T.Y. McGill will now become depth on the Chargers defensive line.
