On whether or not CB is more important than a pass rusher:
I say no on the CB vs Edge. Pass rusher is #2 to QB now. Check out this Jets defense. Can rank top 10 in all the categories in the world, rack up all the first round picks and expensive signings they want, the defense never truly dominates or makes plays in key situations because they don’t have edge defenders who can beat tackles 1-on-1 consistently enough. Even though this is an offensive league now, have to make a hard, hard play for edge this offseason. I wouldn’t care if it was the only position on defense that they attacked. (Besides CB2 of course. Just re-sign Claiborne or roll with Roberts/Robinson/Jones, or there probably is a solid option out there for cheap.)

On whether or not CB is more important than a pass rusher:
I think a in-his-prime Revis-level DB is more valuable than most pass rushers, but you get maybe one or two of those guys in a generation. When you build a team, you need 5 things: 1: A Quarterback 2: A guy to protect the Quarterback 3: A guy to pass catches from the Quarterback 4: A guy to hit the Quarterback 5: A guy to cover the guy catching balls from the Quarterback We have #1, but are lacking the other four.

On whether or not we should get Le’Veon Bell:
I’m all for Le’Veon at 17-19 per year. This team needs weapons. Darnold needs a reliable safety valve. And dammit, wouldn’t it just be fun to have a top 15 offensive weapon on our team to watch week in and week out? Whether Macc stays or goes, this is the time the organization needs to go for it. Assuming Darnold is ‘the guy,’ we have him on a rookie deal for 3 more years, plus one more cost-effective year with the 5th year option. Lets go out and spend and get the golden boy a weapon. Looking at the FA WR list, there aren’t any names that I’d be interested in. I was skeptical at first, but I’ve decided I’m all on board. Go get Le’Veon.

On whether or not we should get Le’Veon Bell:
Too risky, too little value
I’d maybe pay $17 mil, but with only $30 gtd, which ain’t gonna cut it. First of all bell is not a great fit for this team as a RB (though as a WR2 he’d be great). Second, I don’t see bell making it through 3 years being effective. Either injury, suspension or decline will make it very unlikely he earns this contract. Third, his best years are most likely ‘19 and ‘20 and I don’t see us being competitive until ‘21 at best (and that’s IF we finally start drafting we’ll, god help us). Fourth, we already have an albatross contract in TJ and can ill afford another, cap space or no. Bell’s an exciting player – loads of talent but would be largely wasted here. Plus, if he does come here, it means he’s looking for a big payday more than to win games (let’s be honest folks). My gut tells me that kinda guy quits when the going gets tough (and behind our oline it certainly will). So no thanks.

On the correlation between Trumaine Johnsons’ level of play and contract:
Sweet
The 2nd highest paid CB in the league is the 37th ranked player on one of the worst rosters in the league. Quality use of assets.

On how Isaiah Crowell’s performance has more to do with the Oline than himself:
Isaiah Crowell
Its my opinion, this collection of very poor results is caused way more by one of the worst Run Blocking OLines in the NFL than it is to any Running Back. Crowell’s Elusive Rtg is actually 8th in the NFL. (“Elusive Rating” distills the success and impact of a runner with the ball independently of the blocking in front of him by looking at how hard he was to bring down. The Formula: (Missed Tackles Forced) / (Designed Run Attempts + Receptions) * (Yards After Contact Per Attempt * 100)) The Problem is the Jets Adjusted Line Yards is 30th. They can’t run block. Just so you guys know, Billal Powell and Elijah McGuire were also terrible in Success rate last year. In fact McGuire was dead last in the NFL. Forte was actually highest on the Jets, although he was pretty bad too. I don’t think changing the ballcarrier is going to make much difference unless the OL is significantly upgraded.

On Karl Dorrell’s Track Record:
The bottom line is that Darnold will be handcuffed as long as his coaches are Bowles and Bates. It is amateur hour with those two. As long as Bates and Bowles are in charge, I just want Darnold to ride out the season, injury free. Having said that, IMO, the Jets should immediately fire both and hand the offensive reins — if not the entire team — to WR coach Karl Dorrell. Dorrell is the one coach on the staff who has consistently gotten his position group to exceed expectation. You want to know why Marshall and Decker were an effective tandem? Why Enunwa has become a beast? Why Robbie Anderson is one of Macc’s few bright spots? Dorrell probably deserves some of the credit. On top of that, Dorrell has experience as a QB coach (He got Matt Schaub to putt up a Pro Bowl season), as OC in college, and has 5 years of HC experience at UCLA. I’ll take Dorrell over Bowles and Bates in a heartbeat.

On the Importance of getting game experience:
Extensive write up, but ...
There are things that happen in real games that just cant be learned or replicated in practice. Things like the fact that the linebacker will blindside you with the intent of knocking you out of the game if you dont move or get rid of the ball quicker. No tap on the back like you get with the red jersey on. or smart defensive coordinators making adjustments at half time, and seeing a whole new defensive scheme based on the play of the game. The full speed hits and tackles on the field, the pressure of a real game. Every QB has to just experience it live, so the more he sees the better he will be. I dont buy the argument of bad habits developing, if he is a true franchise level QB, then any bad habits should be corrected by the next good coach. If he is who we hope then you expect him to be able to make adjustments to his style and habits as he moves along in his career. One more things on great QB coaches, are those great coaches who made those guys into great QB’s?, or are those great QB’s who made the coaches great? I think many of the guys we thing of great coaches are guys who get themselves into good situations. I always think of Pat Riley, a HOF coach no doubt, but he always took a job with the right elements in place to be successful. Do you think he would come to the Knicks now with this mess … doubtful

On why we should allow Darnold to play the rest of the season:
Sorry superhuman, I still disagree.
Petty sat for a season or two before starting and he still had terrible technique, let alone an inability to read defenses. This coaching staff also gave Hack all of the first team reps last season and he still couldn’t hack it. Ultimately, this whole development idea is a crapshoot. However, I believe that if Sam is healthy, he should play. You can’t learn to drive by only reading books.

On the lack of offensive talent compared to the Chiefs and the Rams:
MNF made me sorry to be a Jets fan
They don’t have a single offensive player that would start for either team. It’s like watching a different sport with the Chiefs and rams.
