Johnny Holton is back on Raiders roster even if we don’t know his position

Wednesday the Raiders announced Johnny Holton had been called up from the practice squad. After changing his position to defensive back while he was on the practice squad, they’re now referring to him as a wide receiver again. But on the official roster, he is still listed as a defensive back.

It makes more sense that he would be a wide receiver. After all, he had never played DB in his career before the Raiders changed his designation as part of the scout team. He had 9 catches for 218 yards and 3 touchdowns for the team last season.

Holton was originally an undrafted free agent signee out of Cincinnati in 2016 and has appeared in 31 games over the past two seasons.

Most of Holton’s work has been as a special teamer. He is an outstanding gunner, which figures to be a main duty of his should he be activated for the game in Baltimore. But the Raiders could use his receiving skills as well.

The Raiders receiving corps before his addition was Seth Roberts, Marcell Ateman, Dwayne Harris, and newly re-signed Keon Hatcher.

To replace Holton’s spot on the practice squad, the Raiders put WR Saeed Blacknall back on the squad and added undrafted rookie CB Arrion Springs.

Springs is a 5-foot-11, 208-pound cornerback that was originally signed by the Chiefs this past offseason as an undrafted free agent out of Oregon and had stints on the practice squads for the Chiefs, Saints, and Browns.

Springs played four years (2014-17) with the Ducks, appearing in 40 contests and making 137 tackles (97 solo), two sacks, two interceptions, 42 passes defended, three forced fumbles and one fumble recovery.
