It’s been over a week since “Black Monday” and over half of the head coaching vacancies have been filled. Who are the candidates that remain available for hire?
Now entering Day 10 of the NFL head coach hiring season, over half of the vacancies have already been filled. The Packers went and hired Matt Lafleur to kick things off on Monday, and the Cardinals and Buccaneers followed the next day with the respective hirings of USC’s (short lived) offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury and ex-Cardinals coach Bruce Arians.
Today, the Browns named current offensive coordinator Freddie Kitchens their next head coach and the Broncos just announced Vic Fangio as their next head coach as well. That leaves the Bengals, Dolphins and Jets’ openings still available.
The Jets’ search has boiled down to ex-Dolphins coach Adam Gase, ex-Lions coach Jim Caldwell and potentially Baylor head coach Matt Rhule vying for the spot, but ex-Packers coach Mike McCarthy only wants to be considered for that job. The Dolphins and Bengals are deciding between numerous candidates.
Got all that? Good. Let’s list off the names who still seem to be (and could potentially be) in play for the Jets, Dolphins and most importantly, the Bengals.
- Bill Lazor, Bengals offensive coordinator (linked to Bengals)
- Brian Flores, Patriots defensive coordinator (linked to Dolphins)
- Dan Campbell, Saints defensive coordinator (linked to Browns)
- Darrin Simmons, Bengals special teams coordinator (linked to Bengals)
- Dennis Allen, Saints defensive coordinator (linked to Dolphins)
- Eric Bieniemy, Chiefs offensive coordinator (linked to Bengals, Dolphins and Jets)
- Hue Jackson, Bengals special assistant to head coach (linked to Bengals)
- Kris Richard, Cowboys defensive backs coach (linked to Dolphins)
- Matt Eberflus, Colts defensive coordinator (linked to Browns)
- Nick Sirianni, Colts offensive coordinator (linked to Browns)
- Pete Carmichael, Saints offensive coordinator (profile)
- Shane Waldron, Rams pass game coordinator (linked to Bengals)
- Todd Monken, former Buccaneers offensive coordinator (linked to Bengals and Jets)
- Vance Joseph, former Broncos head coach (linked to Bengals)
- Zac Taylor, Rams quarterbacks coach (linked to Bengals)
The Bengals eight candidates they’ve interviewed over the last week are all still available to be hired, but Hue Jackson and Vance Joseph remain the names with the most buzz behind them.
We should see the remaining vacancies filled shortly, but these names are the ones to watch.
