The 49ers signed a free agent who isn’t even in the photo editor

The San Francisco 49ers signed a free agent on Friday, agreeing to terms on a two-year contract with kicker Jonathan Brown. We do not have a photo of Brown in our story editor, so make of that what you will.

But seriously, the move provides the 49ers with an offseason leg who could end up getting preseason work to show off to future employers. Additionally, it does give the 49ers a chance to look at a kicker they might consider down the road if the 49ers do not get Robbie Gould signed to an extension this year. The team franchised Gould with hopes of figuring out a deal before July 15th. If nothing happens, they could franchise him again next year, but my guess is they would start looking for other options at that point.

Here’s a rundown of Brown’s history, courtesy of 49ers PR.

Brown (5-10, 195) originally entered the NFL in 2016 after signing with the Cincinnati Bengals as an undrafted rookie free agent on May 8, 2016. He was waived by Cincinnati on August 30, 2016 and later re-signed with the team on January 20, 2017. Following his release on August 1, 2017, he was signed to the Bengals practice squad on December 28, 2017, and later signed a Reserve/Future contract on January 1, 2018. He connected on all six of his field goal attempts during the 2018 preseason with the Bengals, including a 55-yard attempt, prior to being waived on September 1, 2018.

A 26-year-old native of Clinton, MS, Brown attended the University of Louisville for four years (2012-15) after transferring from the University of Kentucky in 2011. He began his collegiate career playing soccer at Kentucky and later joined Louisville’s soccer program. Brown joined the Cardinals football program in 2014 and served as a kicker on team’s kickoff unit.
