The Ravens had been exploring the pass rusher market for the past few weeks, and it appears they’ve officially decided to tap into it, by bringing a familiar face back into the fray:
Former Ravens’ LB Pernell McPhee, who left to go play in Chicago and Washington, is returning to Baltimore on a one-year deal, per league source. McPhee has 31 career sacks and six forced fumbles, and Ravens looking for some more.

Pernell McPhee left Baltimore after the 2014 season to cash in on a big contract with the Bears, and now rejoins the team after an injury riddled stint in Chicago (and Washington in 2018) saw him post just 14 sacks during the last three seasons. For him, it represents a chance to rebuild his stock on a one-year contract in a familiar environment after a tough stretch.
For the Ravens, it’s a flyer on a guy who they know well; Wink Martindale was the linebackers coach during McPhee’s best seasons and knows how to effectively utilize him. Regardless, adding another player into the mix at this position felt inevitable, and when Ezekiel Ansah signed with the Seahawks it appeared their top target was officially out of the picture.
That changed on Thursday when they snatched up McPhee. While his best years appear to be behind him, if he is able to return to even near the form he had prior to his big open-market contract, he could prove to be a worthy addition for the Ravens.
