Falcons fantasy football stud and dud from Week 2

NFL: Philadelphia Eagles at Atlanta Falcons Jason Getz-USA TODAY Sports

Julioooohh my goodness.

The Atlanta Falcons made their first mark in the win column on Sunday night, against the Philadelphia Eagles. That performance was gritty, gutsy, and any other positive adjective you can think of which starts with the letter g.

The Falcons put up 24 points in this one, doubling their total from Week 1. The fantasy football fruit was a lot more plentiful as a result.

There is a lot of great content available here at the Falcoholic, and I encourage you to check it out if you want some really in depth analysis. This article will look at things strictly from a fantasy football perspective (that means looking at nothing other than purely statistics). Here is Atlanta’s fantasy stud and fantasy dud from Week 2’s victory against the Eagles.

Fantasy Stud/Dud 2019 History:

Past Studs: Calvin Ridley (1)

Past Duds: Devonta Freeman (1)

Fantasy Stud - Julio Jones

Stat Line - 5 catches, 107 receiving yards, 2 receiving touchdowns: 22.6 standard league points, 27.6 PPR points

Making Julio Jones this week’s fantasy stud was an incredibly easy call. While the Alabama alum totaled just five receptions (important for PPR purposes), he made the most of his opportunities — averaging 21.4 yards per reception and finding the end zone twice.

Jones turned a solid fantasy day, 53 yards and a touchdown with a little over two minutes left in the game, into a spectacular one when he took a screen pass 54 yards to the house to not only win the game for Atlanta but also to win some fantasy matchups in the process. That catch and run vaulted Julio into first place on the all time franchise leaderboard for receiving yards.

Jones now has three touchdowns after two games and is currently the WR8 in all of fantasy. I expect him to creep into the top five as the season goes along.

Dud

Mohamed Sanu: 4 catches, 16 receiving yards: 1.6 standard league points, 5.6 PPR points

Devonta Freeman was staking his claim to be featured as the dud once again this week, but he somewhat salvaged his poor rushing performance by picking up an additional 42 receiving yards on three receptions.

Sanu was a very important contributor for the Falcons in real life in this one — he recovered a crucial second half fumble around a swarm of Eagles defenders and he helped release Jones on that game-winning screen pass by playing it perfectly and making a crucial block. However, those plays don’t make a dent in fantasy football, even if they were crucial in helping the team win.

Sanu was a desperation flex start this week against an Eagles passing defense that got toasted by Case Keenum a week earlier. He’ll have some weeks where he finds the end zone, but it’s difficult to trust Sanu in any fantasy format with Julio Jones still doing his thing and Calvin Ridley clearly carving out a larger role in his second year.
