Golden Nuggets: Will Jason Verrett finally suit up on Sunday?

The 49ers made several free agent signings over the offseason, but one of the more intriguing acquistions was oft-injured CB Jason Verrett.

Verrett began his career as a first round pick for the San Diego Chargers in 2014 but he played in just 6 games his rookie year ultimately landing on injured reserve for the remainder of the season with both a torn labrum and torn rotator cuff.

In 2015 he returned healthy and played 14 games - missing only two with a foot injury - and played well enough to earn a spot on the AFC pro bowl roster as an alternate.

Unfortunately that would be the only healthy season for Verrett, as he would be limited to just 5 games over the next three seasons, suffering a torn ACL and a torn achilles.

So it wasn’t a suprise to 49ers fans (or Charger fans) when Verrett found himself struggling with injuries again this summer, missing the entire preseason and first week of the regular season recovering from what was described by Shanahan as “a significant ankle injury”.

However - according to the Week 2 injury report - Verrett is finally healthy and ready to play.

But will he suit up? And if so, what will his role be?

Ahkello Witherspoon had a strong showing opposite Richard Sherman in week one vs the Bucs, and I can’t imagine he’ll be asked to make room for Verrett.

Which means if Verrett is active on Sunday, it will be in a reserve role.

Of course, it’s also possible that if he isn’t able to contribute on special teams, Shanahan might decide to make him a healthy scratch for the week two game vs the Bengals.

Either way, the fact that he is finally healthy and available is good news for both the 49ers, and for the fans who were excited by the signing this offseason and are looking forward to finally seeing him in action.
