NFL: Atlanta Falcons at Minnesota Vikings Harrison Barden-USA TODAY Sports

A statement game by the defense and by our rushing offense

Happy post-win Monday, everyone!

Wow, that was a heck of a game. Anthony Barr sacked Matt Ryan on the first offensive play of the game, and that pretty much set the tone for how the rest of the game was going to go.

The D held the Falcons offense to zero points until the fourth quarter, and the Falcons offense could do very little. Ryan was under pressure, they could not run the ball (their leading rusher finished with 7 more rushing yards than Matt Ryan), and they did very little until it no longer mattered. The defense forced turnovers, didn’t make a lot of mistakes, and they made the day much easier for the Vikings offense. I was happy to see Anthony Barr having a big day, and Anthony Harris had a huge day as well, and I hope Mackensie Alexander is okay.

The running game took off running (pun intended), and it kept rolling throughout the game. Dalvin Cook showed why so many fans are excited to see him back on the field, and if that kid stays healthy, this will be a fun year. Mattison made the most out of the touches he was given, too. The offensive line did their job opening running lanes for the running backs, and they looked much better than what we saw last year. When the running game is working like it did yesterday, there is no reason to pass a whole lot, and the Vikings didn’t. I’m very glad that we have the offensive coaching group that we have this year instead of what we began the year with last year, I think that is going to prove to make a tremendous difference in the offense’s performance.

You know what else looked good yesterday? Our special teams play. They blocked a punt (I was beginning to think blocked punts only happened TO the Vikings, not FOR them), Colquitt boomed the ball when he punted, and you probably won’t believe this, but........we didn’t miss an extra point all day. Seriously. If you don’t believe me, look it up.

In the end, the good guys are sitting at 1-0, and there is much reason to be happy today for fans of the Vikings.

Around the DN since our last open thread:

Chris has your post-game wrap-up.

The guys talk about the Vikings’ kicking situation on Good Morning Gjallarhorn episode 62, by Luft Krigare.

Other Vikings/NFL news, other sports news, and random oddities and annoyances:

Here are all the NFL scores and highlights from week one, from ESPN.

If the hiring of DeFilippo wasn’t bad enough, it gets worse for Jaguars fans. Nick Foles suffered a broken collarbone yesterday during their game against the Chiefs, per the Sporting News.

After all the off-season hype, the Browns got whooped by the Titans at home, recap courtesy of ESPN. Fans were booing the team, apparently they believed the hype. They should have talked to me, I could have warned them.

How ‘bout that Antonio Brown situation? It’ll be interesting to see how he pans out in New England, maybe they’ll get the NFL to let him keep his red stapler old helmet. To me, it’s similar to inviting Charles Manson to a party. It could be a fun time, but it’s quite possible that bad things will happen. In case you hadn’t heard, the Raiders released the wide receiver on Saturday, courtesy of SI.com, and was signed by the Patriots later that day, that story from USA Today.

We come to today’s media selection:

It’s post-win Monday, and you know what that means. STRIKE UP THE BAND!

We all know the rules, but in case someone is new:

  • No discussion of politics or religion
  • No feeding of the trolls
  • Leave the gender hatred at the door
  • Keep the bad language to a minimum (using the spoiler tags, if you must)
  • Speaking of which, if discussing a newer show or movie, please use spoiler tags\
  • No pictures that could get someone fired or in serious trouble with their employer
  • If you can’t disagree in a civil manner, feel free to go away
  • While navigating the open thread, just assume it’s sarcasm.

With that, the beer light is on and the bar is open. Belly up & tie one on, don’t tip the cows don’t forget to tip your waitress, and try the Falcon and wild rice soup.
