What are you hoping for in the opener?
At long last the 2019 NFL season is upon us as the Chicago Bears and Green Bay Packers renew their longstanding rivalry as the kickoff to the league’s 100th season. We made it.
This is an open thread for game chat.
It’s going to be great to enjoy an actual football game of significance and there will obviously be a lot of reasons for Cowboys fans to watch:
- It’s football
- If you have fantasy players involved
- It’s football... again
- These are both potential NFC playoff teams
Last season the Chicago Bears won the NFC North thanks to a down season for Green Bay. Aaron Rodgers has dominated that division for so long but at long last even he couldn’t outlast Mike McCarthy. The Packers have a new head coach and conceivably a new offense, but will it be enough against the likes of Khalil Mack and his friends?
It may only be Week 1 and while we’re going to enjoy ever bit of the NFL season that lies in front of us, we’ve all got playoff aspirations for the Dallas Cowboys and the truth is that these two teams could be thorns in the side of those quests.
All of that being said, which of these two teams winning provides the best result for the Cowboys long-term? There’s a case to be made for both.
It all comes down to who you think will win the NFC North
Ultimately, who you prefer to win the season-opener depends on who you believe is more likely to win the NFC North. Whichever of these two teams (assuming one of them does win the division) that does not get a hat and t-shirt will be in contention for one of the NFC’s wildcard spots and that’s who could potentially impact the Cowboys.
Dallas will host Green Bay (and visit Chicago) in 2019 but as the season begins the Bears have more promising Super Bowl odds than the Packers. If we’re to assume that the Bears do repeat as division champions then it obviously makes sense to root for them on Thursday night. The Cowboys control their own fate to a degree against the two by virtue of having games against them both.
Of course, this is Aaron Rodgers we’re talking about. Unfortunately we know full well how good he can be and if Matt LeFleur is able to tap into those abilities this season it could be a long 2019 for teams besides just the Bears.
