We’ve reached halftime with the Saints trailing 14-3. Let’s get ready for the second half!
The New Orleans Saints trail the Houston Texans 14-3 at the end of the first half of the 2019 season opener in the Dome. On the surface, the Saints seem to be well on their way to losing their sixth consecutive season opener, but there’s still another half to go, and 11 points is quite far from an insurmountable deficit. Let’s take a quick look at how we got in this early hole.
In the 2nd quarter, the Saints made it down to the Houston 11 yard line, but the drive died following a Drew Brees interception at the 4 yard line. Houston immediately followed this with a 54 yard completion from Deshaun Watson to Will Fuller. Houston completed the drive with a 21 yard touchdown run on 4th and 1, giving the Texans the 7-0 lead. The Saints followed up with an 11 play, 65 yard drive, ending with a 35 yard Wil Lutz field goal, cutting the score to 7-3 Texans. Unfortunately for the home crowd, Houston followed up the Saints’ score with their own 16 play, 75 yard drive, capped off by a 2 yard touchdown pass from Watson to DeAndre Hopkins increasing their lead to 14-3. A failed 56 yard field goal attempt by Wil Lutz sent the teams into halftime.
If you find yourself stunned the Saints are losing a season opener, or that a Dennis Allen-led Saints defense is struggling in a season opener, you haven't paid attention to the Saints season openers in recent years. Despite all of this, the Saints can still pull this one out, but this offense needs to start clicking and they need to get the running game going, in order to control the clock and give this defense a rest.
