No one with the Eagles knows how much Jason Peters actually weighs. While other players must weigh-in countless times during the year, often before and after practice, Peters has managed to avoid the scale at the NovaCare Complex. “It’s the big mystery,” defensive end Brandon Graham said. “As long as I’ve been here, they don’t know. For every era, don’t matter the coach, he don’t weigh-in.” Peters has gotten away with more than his share over the years. When you’ve been to nine Pro Bowls and are a likely Hall of Famer, the powers-that-be are more willing to look the other way. But the metaphorical weight that the veteran left tackle carries in the building has as much to do with his general Jason Peters-ness than anything. “Just by the way he walks around you can feel his presence, kind of like he owns the place,” rookie tackle Andre Dillard said. “He’s seen the beginning and end of a lot of people’s careers. He’s just that big man on campus. He’s not a man of too many words, but when he needs to, he’ll speak up.
Eagles Film Review: Zach Ertz, Washington Wizard - BGN
Ertz has never had as high of expectations coming into a season with the Eagles, nor has he had as much competition for touches in the passing game. After setting a single-season record for receptions by a tight end (116), expect a regression to the mean from Ertz — but that doesn’t necessarily mean a regression in quality of play. At the prime of his game, most safeties and linebackers — let alone the members of the struggling Washington roster — will fail to cover Ertz for four quarters. He just seems to get up for these Washington games.

Eagles takeaways: 1.5 — In 2017, when they won the Super Bowl, the Eagles defense averaged nearly two forced turnovers per game. Last year, that number was essentially cut in half. And that’s not going to get the job done in 2019. The offense can certainly help with that, by getting out to some leads and forcing opponents into passing situations or more risky play calls to try to catch up. While I don’t see that happening on Sunday — we’ve already talked about a potential slow start for the offense — I do see the Eagles defensive front wreaking havoc on Case Keenum without Trent Williams there to protect his blind side. There will be at least one strip sack in this game, and one Keenum pass that floats in the breeze after he was hit on throw and gets picked off a la Chris Long and Patrick Robinson in the NFC Championship Game. Jim Schwartz’s defense needs to get off to a good start in 2019, and I think they do that on Sunday. OVER.

This is a game the Eagles should win. This is a game they need to win. If recent years hold true, the Eagles should prevail. Doug Pederson is 3-0 in season openers. The Eagles have won four straight games against Washington. That doesn’t guarantee you anything of course, but those are good trends.

2. Take shots down the field. Yes, that means Jackson. The Eagles are a tough matchup for any secondary with the weapons they have, and they’re going to have some favorable matchups. If Josh Norman is assigned to Alshon Jeffery, as the Eagles expect, then Jackson and Nelson Agholor will have some chances to win one-on-one battles. Now, Washington isn’t going to be dumb here. They will shade Jackson over the top. And he may not run free all day. But the Eagles could use a “chunk” play or three to really get the Redskins on their heels defensively.

Quarterbacks I love in Week 1 — Carson Wentz, Philadelphia Eagles, vs. Redskins (ESPN projection: 19.3 points): You’ll call me a homer and you’d be right, but the Redskins’ defense is going to be good this season. Unfortunately, the offense won’t be, especially on the road against the Eagles with Case Keenum under center and no Trent Williams protecting his blind side. Expect a turnover or two, giving a short field to Wentz, who since the start of 2017 is the fifth-best QB in fantasy, which includes multiple touchdown passes in each of his past three games against Washington. Wentz is healthy and surrounded by the best supporting cast of his career, including a #revengegame narrative for DeSean Jackson. More on him later, but suffice it to say that last season the Redskins gave up multiple touchdown passes in nine games and Sunday, it will happen again.

They are better: The Eagles have the better coach, the better quarterback, the better offense, and the better defense. They’re also at home and should be supremely motivated to start fast with Wentz back. Good starts: Doug Pederson’s Eagles are 3-0 ATS in Week 1 games. A small, but encouraging sample: Pederson’s Eagles are 3-1 ATS at home when favored by seven or more points and are 2-1 ATS when favored by nine or more points.

There’s a reason the Eagles are favored by double-digits in this game and I’m guessing it might have to do with Case Keenum. It’s safe to say he’s the worst starting quarterback in the NFL, right? That’s a big obstacle to overcome, especially playing on the road. Add in the fact he’s being “protected” by Donald Penn and Ereck Flowers on the left side of the offensive line and that creates even more concern. I think Washington has some nice pieces. Ryan Kerrigan is an absolute Eagles killer and now Montez Sweat could cause even more problems for Philly. Derrius Guice, if healthy, could be a beast. Josh Norman’s actually done a good job in his matchups with Alshon Jeffery since the former signed the Eagles. I think Jay Gruden isn’t a bad coach. With all that said, I think the Eagles are the superior team and they have home field advantage so I’m fully expecting them to win on Sunday. I’ll say the score is 28-17.

Washington will need to account for it, even if it’s no surprise — who didn’t expect Tampa Bay to go long to Jackson on the first play last season? Defenses have always known he’s a deep threat. He still has the most touchdowns of 60-plus yards in NFL history. “I’m sure they sit in the meetings, and they’re watching and they’re listening to their coaches, ‘Don’t let that little whatever beat you!’” Jackson said. “I’m sure they’re emphasizing, but at the end of the day, they’ve still got to stop it.”

Another AAF standout is officially out of the NFL. The Eagles released receiver Charles Johnson from injured reserve on Saturday. He received an injury settlement from the team. On August 28, the Eagles placed Johnson on injured reserve, making him ineligible to return during the regular season.

Joe Douglas: This isn’t really Douglas’ team. The Jets hired him only after allowing his predecessor to go on a historic free agent spending spree and run the 2019 Draft. Still Douglas will have a few opportunities to make his mark. He already has with the signing of Ryan Kalil at center. His most important early test will be making sure the team has an adequate kicker. Even consider Douglas’ late hiring, there is no excuse for him if the position is an issue at any point this season. There are always adequate kickers available. It is the rare position where supply is greater than demand. It will also be interesting to see whether Douglas can swing a trade in season for a problem position like cornerback.
