The Lions are facing a tough opponent in the Los Angeles Chargers for their home opener. If they lose, they’re a game under .500 and have a rough four-game stretch ahead of them. I hate to call a game this early a “must win,” but it’s definitely an important one to have so that they don’t go digging themselves into a deep hole by Week 7 or 8.
At 1-0, the Chargers are coming off of a close win against the Colts in overtime. They’re as good as they want to be, but they’re also a bit vulnerable in their current state, as they’re dealing with a bunch of injuries and a Melvin Gordon holdout.
Today’s Question of the Day is:
Which Lions player will be the key to securing the first win of the season?
My answer: I think the defense, especially the pass rush, is going to have to step up and have a cleaner game, especially against a struggling Chargers offensive line.
In place of Russell Okung, Los Angeles started Trent Scott at left tackle in Week 1 and he did a pretty poor job, finishing with an offensive grade of 37.3 according to Pro Football Focus, while giving up four pressures.
Across from Trent Scott will mostly be a combination of Romeo Okwara and Trey Flowers. After a disappointing Week 1 performance, I expect Flowers to come out angry against the Chargers and I believe he’ll have a big game. He will be the key to the Lions getting pressure on Philip Rivers.
Another good candidate is Damon Harrison Sr., who will look to bounce back after an underwhelming performance last week. The Chargers will likely look to run the ball early and often with a speedy Austin Ekeler, and the Lions’ run defense will have to do better than last week, especially in the fourth quarter.
