Redskins Mock Draft Scenario: Chase Young plus Senior Bowl Prospects

NCAA Football: New Orleans Bowl-Appalachian State vs UAB Chuck Cook-USA TODAY Sports

A look at a possible Redskins mock draft scenario

Given that it’s Senior Bowl week I thought I would do an On the Clock Redskins Mock Draft featuring players who were down in Mobile this week. While I considered exploring a trade back scenario to look at even more Senior Bowl players, I decided to keep Chase Young in the first round. While I think trade back scenarios are very plausible, the most likely outcome is that the Redskins take Young with the 2nd pick. In later simulations I will explore trade options.

As always follow along with the simulation here!

2: EDGE CHASE YOUNG, OHIO STATE

-Young is an elite prospect and the Redskins would be very lucky to add him to their defense. His speed off the edge is devastating and he has the power to go inside of tackles as well. He should be a perennial 10+ sack player who is among the league leaders in pressure. Combining him with Sweat, Ioannidis, Allen, Payne and potentially Kerrigan is enough to make the Redskins defensive line among the best in the league.

66: WR CHASE CLAYPOOL, NOTRE DAME

-Claypool is a guy I really was high on prior to the Senior Bowl and he’s shown why this week. Any question of bulking him up to be a TE should stop after this week. He has the speed and quickness to succeed at receiver. His route running was strong and his catch radius at his size is ridiculous. Pairing him with McLaurin would give the Redskins a pair of young talented receivers to grow with Haskins.

105: LB AKEEM DAVIS-GAITHER, APPALACHIAN STATE

-Davis-Gaither has really stood out this week as the best coverage linebacker on either squad. He’s undersized at just 219 lbs, but he has the frame to add some weight if he needs to. He could struggle some versus the run, but you want him on your team because he could match up with the Ertz/Goedert and Engram in the division. In the base defense he would play the Will linebacker and then push to be the primary nickel LB on passing downs.

141: OT HAKEEM ADENIJI, KANSAS

-Adeniji had a really strong week of practice and was one of the better blockers in pass protection among guards. Considering he was primarily a tackle in college his performance this week was even more impressive. While he could maybe be a swing tackle at the next level, Adeniji showed enough that he could eventually become a starter if he moved inside. I wouldn’t expect it as a rookie, but the upside is there.

148: S ANTOINE BROOKS JR., MARYLAND

-Brooks has been a quality 3 year starter for the Terps, earning All-Conference honors each year (2nd in 2018 and 2019, HM in 2017). He’s excellent in run support and blitzing and he showed this week that he can cover pretty well also. He matched up very well versus TEs, and more than held his own against receivers. If he’s still on the board at this spot he would be a nice pick-up for the Skins secondary.

216: CB KINDLE VILDOR, GEORGIA SOUTHERN

-Vildor quickly became a favorite down in Mobile. During the first practice session he struggled in 1-on-1’s and it looked like it might be a long week for the Georgia Southern prospect. Vildor continued to improve throughout the day and had multiple interceptions in full team drills. He continued to play well in the 2nd and 3rd practice and now looks like a late round draftable corner with eventual slot option.

229: OT JUSTIN HERRON, WAKE FOREST

-Herron was a four year starter at Wake Forest at tackle. He doesn’t have a ton of upside, but he looks like he could develop into a swing tackle. Herron was solid this week in practice and even got some reps in at guard. For a late round guy, he has a pretty decent chance to compete for a job next season.

What do you think? Which of these players do you want in Washington? What other Senior Bowl players caught your eye?
