Is Salvon Ahmed the most-likely UDFA to make the team?

The former Husky wouldn’t be the first UDFA RB to find success with the 49ers.

If there is one position that Kyle Shanahan can get the most out of, regardless of where the player was drafted or how they made it to the 49ers, it’s the running back position.

In Bleacher Report’s latest piece on UDFAs, author Kristopher Knox believes former Washington running back Salvon Ahmed has the greatest chance of making the team out of their haul of undrafted players, stating, “(Shanahan) likes having a collection of them at his disposal.”

“Yes, the 49ers already have Raheem Mostert, Tevin Coleman and Jerick McKinnon in their backfield. However, injuries have prevented McKinnon from seeing the field in San Francisco, and the 49ers recently traded away Matt Breida, who had 123 carries and 623 yards in 2019.”

With Matt Breida off to the Dolphins, things are certainly open enough for Ahmed to impress his way onto the team. If you haven’t watched a ton of film yet, then I advise you to go check out how slippery he is.

At 5’11 and just under 200 pounds, Ahmed is not going to run anybody over, but he’s powerful enough to stick his foot in the ground and break arm tackles. In his final season at Washington, he rushed for 1,020 yards and 11 touchdowns on 188 carries. He’s unfortunately not going to be used much as a pass-catcher, especially after he hauled in just 16 passes for 84 yards in 2019. But at the end of the day, as long as he can find the open lanes and make the first guy miss more often than not, there will be a place for him on the 49ers. Add in some lingering injuries with guys ahead of him on the depth chart, and the idea of him lasting to the final “55” is all the more realistic.
