Houston Texans Coaching News: Tracy Smith Promoted To Special Teams Coordinator

The new man in charge ably assisted the former man in charge, so let us hope there’s nary a hiccup.

Since the franchise’s inception, Texans fans have run the gauntlet when it comes to watching everything from horrific (most of the time) to exceptional (recently) special teams play. When Houston special teams coordinator Brad Seely retired last month, the smart money was on Tracy Smith, who had so ably assisted Seely during the last two years at NRG Park, stepping into the void to take over. John McClain reports tonight that Smith will indeed call the shots for the special teams units under Bill O’Brien in 2020.

It’s intriguing that O’Brien interviewed both Josh Cribbs and Sammy Morris for the gig; Cribbs has worked as an special teams intern on the Browns’ staff for the last two years, so this would have been a considerable jump up the coaching ladder for him.

Personally, I’m happy the Texans promoted Tracy Smith; I like the continuity and giving the guy who served as Seely’s right hand for more than a decade the opportunity to show he’s ready for the big chair. What’s your take?
