Ojemudia will be competing for a top 3 cornerback spot as season gets going

COLLEGE FOOTBALL: OCT 05 Iowa at Michigan

Steve Atwater tells the hosts at Broncos Country Tonight that the third-round pick should be a competitor at the position.

Steve Atwater joined Ryan Edwards and Benjamin Allbright on Broncos Country Tonight Tuesday and discussed the role they expect former Iowa Hawkeyes’ cornerback Michael Ojemudia to play this season.

Although there were some rumors that he could play safety, according to Allbright, Atwater sees no reason that Ojemudia won’t be coming in to compete at corner.

“I think he’s going to be playing the cornerback position, so I don’t see them moving him right away,” Atwater said, adding that that may change if Justin Simmons or Kareem Jackson goes down with an injury “or [Ojemudia] has trouble executing the playbook or something like that.”

But guest host Mario Vetanze noted that Ojemudia graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering so “if anyone can learn the playbook, it is OJ.”

Plus, if there’s a position of uncertainty among the veteran players, it’s the cornerback position, so the third-round pick could be called in for starter duty as the season goes along.

The rookie inked his four-year deal with the Broncos on Tuesday afternoon for $4,310,560. According to 9News’ Mike Klis, that figure includes a $1,015,560 signing bonus that will be prorated over the four years for salary cap purposes.

Atwater remains concerned about how well the rookies will be able to get up to game speed this season given the virtual offseason and increased difficulty getting the calls down, but he’s looking to veterans, particularly on the defense, to help the rookies.

So which defensive player is Atwater most excited to watch once 2020 gets underway?

Free agent pickup Jurrell Casey.

“I’m looking forward to that positive energy and leadership he has and him being a force for our defense,” Atwater said. “As well as teaching some of the young guys the tricks of the trade. I’m really looking forward to him being a valuable addition to the defense.”

So which DEFENSIVE player are you most looking forward to seeing this season, Broncos Country?
