Three Colts players who could make the Pro Bowl for the first time in 2020

Which Colts players escalate their play in 2020?

While the 2019 NFL season didn’t go exactly the way we hoped for the Indianapolis Colts, a few Colts players did stand out and have great individual seasons. Left guard Quenton Nelson and tight end Jack Doyle were both named to their second career Pro Bowls after their strong 2019 seasons. The Colts also had a couple of players see their first appearance in the game as center Ryan Kelly and linebacker Darius Leonard, making up for his snub in 2018, both made the game as well.

In today’s article, we are going to look at three players who could make the leap in 2020 and find themselves in their first career Pro Bowl this upcoming season.

Anthony Castonzo, LT

It’s crazy to believe that Castonzo hasn’t made a Pro Bowl up to this point in his NFL career. A first round pick back in 2011, Castonzo has spent his entire NFL career with the Colts. While he was consistently the best offensive lineman early in the Andrew Luck era, he really didn’t hit his stride until the past two seasons where he has played at an extremely high level. This past season, he allowed just three sacks on the year while only committing two penalties according to Pro Football Focus. He also graded out as their eighth overall offensive tackle in the NFL last year.

Castonzo has been the model of consistency throughout his NFL career but I believe that 2020 is the year that he finally gets the recognition that he rightfully deserves. With new quarterback Philip Rivers and a potentially even better rushing game with the addition of Jonathan Taylor, the Colts’ offensive line should get more praise league wide this upcoming season. With the new blocking style employed by Chris Strausser, one that Castonzo performed really well in last year, and potentially more team success in 2020, I think we’ll finally see him make the Pro Bowl this next season.

Kenny Moore II, CB

Speaking out of pure emotion here, I think it is outrageous that Kenny Moore II hasn’t made a Pro Bowl yet in his career. When I sit back and think about it though, it does make some sense, albeit still frustrating. The Pro Bowl has a poor positional system, the same system that led to Leonard missing in 2018, where they don’t have a slotted position for slot cornerback. With nickel being the new base defense in the NFL and with how vastly different a slot corner is from an outside corner, they really should be two different positions. Since it is not, Moore II is lumped in with a lot of talented corners who play both outside and inside and it further hurts his chances.

Speaking purely off his talent and play over the last two seasons, he certainly deserves to make the Pro Bowl. Since 2018, Moore ranks first in the NFL among cornerbacks in run stops (33), sacks (4), interceptions from the slot (5), and has only allowed a passer rating of 73 when targeted in the slot. He is a top tier slot corner in this league and an overall outstanding player. I don’t know if this will finally be the year that he breaks through with a Pro Bowl nod but he certainly deserves it.

Kemoko Turay, DE

This may be a bit of a hot take but Turay is the prime example of a player ready to take a jump in 2020. While he only had 1.5 sacks in four games last year, that does average out to nearly eight sacks on the season. In those four games that he played, he finished as the Colts’ highest rated player according to PFF with a grade of over 90 (which is how they categorize elite players). He was the Colts’ best pass rusher in that short span and the craziest thing is that he did that while playing under 30% of the defensive snaps.

Jump forward to now and he’s fully recovered from that gruesome leg injury from a year ago. The Colts have brought in a new Defensive Line Coach with the emphasis to play and develop the young players. They also brought in All-Pro defensive tackle DeForest Buckner who should make life easier for the outside edge rushers. Everything is looking like it could be a big year for Turay and I know he has the skillset and work ethic to breakout in 2020.
