A.J. Terrell limited, Kendall Sheffield out of Falcons practice Thursday

Wee-ooooo wee-ooooo wee-oooo.

The Atlanta Falcons need all the healthy and effective cornerbacks they can get against the Seattle Seahawks this Sunday, but unfortunately it appears they will not be getting all the healthy and effective cornerbacks they can get.

Kendall Sheffield missed his second straight day of practice on Thursday, a sign that he’ll be limited at best for Sunday’s Week 1 tilt. That’s a major concern because Sheffield is a key reserve who contributes on defense and special teams, but at least he’s not a starter at this moment in time. The more worrying item is that now A.J. Terrell is limited, per the team’s Thursday injury report, with some sort of hamstring injury.

Facing a team as good at throwing the football as Seattle without your nominal top cornerback and an important reserve sounds bad and would likely go quite poorly. Isaiah Oliver and Blidi Wreh-Wilson would have to do yeoman’s work outside—Oliver already has to—and Darqueze Dennard would likely get even more run that he was expected to. The team would also likely have to elevate Josh Hawkins off the practice squad to fill in if it comes to that, putting additional pressure on the pass rush and the Falcons offense to pull off a win. There is no positive way to spin this possibility, unfortunately.

Sheffield will likely be out, but I’m holding out hope that Terrell will return to a full practice tomorrow and be healthy and effective against the Seahawks on Sunday. We could use some good news to start the season.
