Bengals-Browns TNF game thread

Week 2 of the NFL 2020 season begins with Joe Burrow meeting Baker Mayfield in Cleveland

Joe Burrow or Baker Mayfield?”

Obviously as of Thursday, people will be answering with Burrow, a number one overall QB who at least hasn’t ridden the disappointment train yet. And maybe he never will. But Burrow’s greatest attribute right now — aside from his football attributes that made him such an enticing prospect — is his potential.

It was only a year ago that people were excited about Mayfield’s potential.

After posing 23 touchdowns and nine interceptions in his last 10 games as a rookie (including seven touchdowns and no picks in two games against the Bengals), Mayfield was viewed by some as Cleveland’s best catch since Joe Thomas. But Mayfield had five touchdowns and 11 interceptions through his first six games of 2019 and the Browns didn’t recover from a 2-6 start.

Mayfield did throw 15 touchdowns in his last eight games, but with nine interceptions. In Week 1 of this season under a new head coach and offensive coordinator, Mayfield played about as poorly as he had under Freddie Kitchens.

Burrow has more excuses, but he wasn’t much better in his NFL debut against the LA Chargers, averaging 5.3 yards per attempt and throwing one interception with one fumble in a 16-13 loss at home. It’s nothing to be ashamed of, but Thursday night’s game between Cincinnati and Cleveland may feature quarterbacks who still have better names than they do arms.

For now.

Watch and talk about the game right here.
