Browns dealing with injury questions at tackle

Starting RT Jack did not practice on Tuesday, while starting LT Jedrick Wills Jr. was limited as Browns prepare to host Cincinnati on Thursday.

The Cleveland Browns will open the home portion of the 2020 NFL season on Thursday night when they host the Cincinnati Bengals.

Based off Tuesday’s injury report, the Browns might be facing the Bengals without both of their starting offensive tackles.

Right tackle Jack Conklin did not practice as he is dealing with both an ankle and a finger injury suffered in the Week 1 loss to the Baltimore Ravens. Conklin’s injury did not stop him from playing all 73 offensive snaps against the Ravens and he still posted a PFF grade of 73.1, which was the 18th best among 58 offensive tackles.

If Conklin can’t go on Thursday against the Bengals he will likely be replaced by Chris Hubbard - yikes! - who only returned to practice this week as he is dealing with his own ankle injury.

On the left side, rookie Jedrick Wills Jr. was able to practice, albeit on a limited basis, as he is dealing with a bruised shin than knocked him out against the Ravens late in the game. Veteran Kendall Lamm took over from Wills for the last 16 offensive snaps of the game.

Wills had an MRI on his shin on Monday and the news was good as he is “only” suffering from a deep bruise. It sounds like he will be up to the task of at least giving it a go against the Bengals, with Lamm once again waiting in the wings.

Staying on the offensive line, center JC Tretter was limited with soreness in his surgically repaired knee, which will likely be the case for a while, but it would be a surprise if Tretter did not play against the Bengals.

The news is also a bit rough on the defensive side of the ball, as defensive end Olivier Vernon is now dealing with an abdomen injury that has limited him in practice; linebacker Jacob Phillips joined lineback Mack Wilson in dealing with a knee injury; and cornerbacks Greedy Williams and Kevin Johnson, who missed the game with the Ravens, continue to be unable to practice while dealing with a shoulder injury (Williams) and a lacerated liver (Johnson).
