Giants add veteran to help replace Saquon Barkley

Running back Devonta Freeman is reportedly expected to sign with the New York Giants on Wednesday. The move for running back help was obviously necessitated when the Giants lost Saquon Barkley for the season with a torn ACL.

Freeman, 28, is. 2013 fourth-round pick who spent six seasons with the Atlanta Falcons. He has gained 3,972 yards rushing and averaged 4.2 yards per carry in his career.

Freeman carried 184 times for 656 yards for Atlanta last season, averaging a career-low 3.6 yards per carry.

Freeman’s deal is reportedly for one year and could be worth up to $3 million. The Philadelphia Eagles were also said to be interested in Freeman.

“Devonta turned down more money from other teams because he likes the opportunity with the Giants best,” said his agency, Rosenhaus Sports.

Freeman, whenever he is ready to play, will join Dion Lewis, Wayne Gallman and fullback Elijhaa Penny in the Giants Barkley-less backfield.

Practice squad shuffle

Tyler Haycraft, an undrafted player who was impressive while converting from right tackle to center during training camp. has been dropped from the practice squad by the Giants. Haycraft, out of Louisville, is being replaced by linebacker Jermaine Grace.

Grace, 6-1 and 223 pounds, has played in 24 games for Atlanta (twice), Seattle and Indianapolis. He entered the NFL out of the University of Miami as a rookie free agent with the Falcons in 2017. Grace was most recently with the Cleveland Browns, who released him on July 30.
