Former Patriots wide receiver Mohamed Sanu has found a new home

Despite spending a second-round draft pick to bring him aboard via trade last season, the New England Patriots decided to part ways with Mohamed Sanu earlier this month. Two weeks later, the veteran wide receiver has found a new home: according to his agent, Mike McCarthy, Sanu has signed a one-year contract with the San Francisco 49ers.

Sanu’s tenure in New England was off to a hot start. After being used in a rotational capacity in his first game and catching a pair of passes for 23 yards, the former Atlanta Falcons wide receiver had one of his most productive game of the season the following week against the Baltimore Ravens: Sanu caught 10 passes for 81 yards and a score going against one of the NFL’s best defenses.

It was not meant to last, however. In the very next game, he suffered a high-ankle sprain that would require offseason surgery and change his trajectory with the club. Sanu did eventually return to the practice field when New England started its training camp, but he never quite returned to the form that made him look like a perfect fit in the team’s passing offense last year. He was eventually let go ahead of final roster cutdowns.

All in all, Sanu had appeared in nine total games for the club while catching just 27 passes for 218 yards and a touchdown.

Without Sanu, the Patriots currently have four true wide receivers on their roster: Julian Edelman, N’Keal Harry, Damiere Byrd and Jakobi Meyers. They also have four on the practice squad — Mason Kinsey, Devin Ross, Kristian Wilkerson, Isaiah Zuber — as well as one more, Gunner Olszewski, on short-term injured reserve.
