FOOTBALL IS BACK!
February feels like a very long time ago.
With no preseason football, tonight’s kickoff will be our first glimpse of the 2020 NFL season. There is no better way to get football started than with the defending champions and the foe they vanquished in an explosive divisional playoff game.
The Kansas City Chiefs are headline by the superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes, fresh off a gargantuan new contract. At ten years in length for just $477 million, his insane contract matches his insane ability on the football field. The Chiefs, however, will look to add another facet to their game that was modest at best last season: a run game. Clyde Edwards-Helaire is their first round running back, and the Chiefs are hoping he can fill a void left by Kareem Hunt years ago.
The Houston Texans, meanwhile, are a much different team from last year, and it all starts with the departure of DeAndre Hopkins. Deshaun Watson lost his favorite target this offseason, who is now the highest paid receiver thanks to the Arizona Cardinals. Bill O’Brien made the bold move to trade the star receiver for running back David Johnson and a couple of picks. BOB has looked more like a destroyer than a builder. Watson will likely have to lean on Will Fuller, Kenny Stills, and Brandin Cooks to make up for Hopkins, with Duke Johnson adding some threat out of the backfield.
We have waited a long time for this: it is time for football!
