While most of the Power Rankers focused on the QB, we looked at another aspect of the Bears win.
We heard the players and coaches talk all camp long that the 2020 Chicago Bears were going to look a bit differently than what we saw a year ago. A commitment to the running game, a different scheme, less predictability in the run game, and more balance were touted at just about every Zoom press conference we heard.
We were’t quite sure if it was just talk, or if there’d be some substance to their proclamations, but after one week it seems that they were true to their word.
There wasn’t even any pass-happy panic from head coach and play caller Matt Nagy when the Bears were down 23 to 6 in the third quarter. Nagy simply kept running his offense and his team eventually came all the way back to beat the Detroit Lions, 27 to 23.
Nagy had to dial up more through the air in the fourth, but the fact that he kept to the plan in the third shows growth from him, and it shows a confidence in his team to run the ball.
But now let’s check in on what the Power Rankers had to say about the 1-0, first place Chicago Bears.
CBS Sports moved the Bears up 6 spots to number 20.
Mitch Trubisky led them to a fourth-quarter comeback against the Lions. Is this the start of him growing as a quarterback?
Here’s how the Sporting News has it this week.
20. Chicago Bears 1-0 (24)
What was that? Mitchell Trubisky had a classic stinker until he turned into Matthew Stafford-like Captain Comeback against the Lions. The running game and defense being better support helps.
NFL.com moved the Bears up 2 spots to 22nd overall.
Just when it looked like Mitchell Trubisky was finally about to be run out of town for good, the former No. 2 overall pick came to life and threw three touchdown passes in the fourth quarter of a stunning comeback win over the Lions. This marked the Bears’ first comeback from a deficit of 17-plus points entering the fourth quarter since 1998, according to NFL Research. Did they get a dollop of good fortune in the form of D’Andre Swift’s hideous drop in the final seconds? Sure, but we’re not going to take away anything from the Bears right now. That was a game that showed some guts.

23) Chicago Bears
Mitch Trubisky didn’t play great in the Bears win in Detroit, but his 3-0 TD/INT ratio is something new that Chicago fans could really get used to.
ESPN always gives their power ranking a little twist, and this week it was spotlighting a rookie on each team.
20. Chicago Bears (1-0)
Preseason ranking: 22
Best rookie debut: CB Jaylon Johnson
The rookie out of Utah finished the game with six tackles and several pass breakups, including one on the final play when Johnson knocked the ball away from Lions receiver Marvin Jones Jr. to preserve the Bears’ come-from-behind victory. Outside of being run over by Jones during a memorable first-half collision, Johnson had a noteworthy NFL debut. The second-round pick played all 78 snaps on defense and became the first Bears rookie to start Week 1 since Walt Harris in 1996. — Jeff Dickerson

17. Chicago Bears (Last week: 19)
We are not ready to get all fired up after Mitchell Trubisky’s career quarter. The first 45 minutes made one continue to wonder when Nick Foles will take over. Fifteen minutes does not make a season. And though they were favored, these still were the Lions. Matt Patricia is now 9-23-1.

The Bears’ offense showed some encouraging signs, but still looked disjointed until Mitch Trubisky got hot in the fourth quarter. With the Giants coming to Soldier Field on Sunday, the Bears should be 2-0.

After three quarters, it seemed hard to believe that Mitchell Trubisky would be the Bears’ starter in Week 2. To call Trubisky’s fantastic fourth quarter a job-saving performance might be an understatement. The question is if Trubisky can build off that success, or at least if it gives him a little more job security if things go poorly in the next game or two.
