The New England Patriots have two open spots on their payroll following a pair of transactions over the last two days: offensive tackle Yodny Cajuste was sent from the 53-man roster to injured reserve, with fellow lineman Corey Levin being released from the practice squad just two days after originally being brought aboard. How New England will fill those open spots remains to be seen, but the team had two players in for free agency workouts on Friday.

Let’s take a closer look at the pair, quarterback Jacob Dolegala and wide receiver Juwann Winfree.

QB Jacob Dolegala

Despite having served as Central Connecticut’s starter for four years, Dolegala did not hear his name called during the NFL’s 2019 draft. Instead, he joined the Cincinnati Bengals as a rookie free agent and even made his way to the team’s active roster as a third quarterback. That said, his only in-game action so far came in preseason: appearing in two exhibition games last year, he completed 37 of 53 pass attempts for 347 yards and two touchdowns. The 6-foot-6, 240-pound passer was released by the Bengals last week.

WR Juwann Winfree

Even though he had a turbulent college career — he was suspended twice before leaving Maryland (2014), played at a community college (2015) and suffered a torn ACL (2016), and finished at Colorado where he caught 49 passes for 649 yards and four scores (2017, 2018) — Winfree was drafted in Round Six in 2019. The Denver Broncos even kept him on their active roster heading into his rookie season, and he went on to appear in three games without registering any statistics. However, the 6-foot-1, 210-pound wideout was placed on injured reserve after hurting his hamstring and released last week after missing parts of training camp with another injury.
