SNF: Cowboys vs Rams Game Thread

Sunday Night Football, Week 1. The first Sunday Night game of the 2020 NFL regular season. Tonight the Dallas Cowboys travel to Southern California to take on the Los Angeles Rams.

The Cowboys feature a high flying offense, with star running back Ezekiel Elliott, Pro Bowl quarterback Dak Prescott, and three young, talented receivers in Amari Cooper, Michael Gallup and prized rookie CeeDee Lamb, as well as an excellent offensive line. That’s a ton of offensive talent to defend against, and the Dallas offense figures to be one the best offenses in the NFL if their health holds up.

The Rams counter with Jared Goff at quarterback, coming off a down year, and a three headed running back committee in Malcolm Brown, Darrell Henderson and rookie Cam Akers set to replace former star Rams back Todd Gurley. Cooper Kupp, Robert Woods and rookie Van Jefferson head up the receivers, with Tyler Higbee and Gerald Everett providing the firepower at tight end. It is a talented group, but the Rams will be hard pressed to keep up with the Cowboys’ offensive firepower.

The Rams defense revolves around All Pro defensive lineman Aaron Donald, probably the best defensive player in the game right now. Donald is joined by defensive linemate Michael Brockers, who with Donald present a formidable challenge to the Cowboys’ offensive line and running game. The secondary features star cornerback Jalen Ramsey, who should present some problems for at least one of the Cowboys’ receivers.

The Cowboys’ defense lost star cornerback Byron Jones to free agency. His replacement is rookie Trevon Diggs, who may be vulnerable in coverage against the Rams’ veteran receivers. The Rams also may try to exploit the Cowboys’ interior pass defense with tight ends Higbee and Everett, who should be able to generate some mismatches.

Neither team has much of an edge over the other historically. The Cowboys dominated their only game last year, 44-21, and they lead the all time series by the narrowest of margins, 18-17.

It’s the Cowboys and the Rams in the Sunday Night Football season debut.

Enjoy the game everybody.
