Sunday Night Football, Week 2. Tonight the New England Patriots make the long trip to the west coast to take on the Seattle Seahawks.
The Patriots got their Cam Newton era off on the right foot last week by dominating Ryan Fitzpatrick and the Miami Dolphins. Bill Belichick and crew will face a much tougher test this week against a Seattle Seahawks team featuring one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL and a future Hall of Famer, Russell Wilson.
Wilson and the Seahawks crushed the Atlanta Falcons last week as Wilson completed a ridiculous 31 of 35 passes for 299 yards and 4 touchdowns. At age 31 Wilson is at the height of his considerable talents, and with Tyler Lockett, D.K. Metcalf, David Moore, Greg Olson, et al, the Seahawks have the weapons to make opposing teams pay if they key on the Seattle running game.
The Patriots, if we can judge by the first week of action, may be the most run happy team in the NFL this year, a mantle often worn by the Seahawks in years past. The Patriots passed the ball just 19 times for 140 yards against the Dolphins, a stark contrast to the passing offenses of the last 20 years with Tom Brady under center. Cam Newton was efficient and effective passing against an outmanned Dolphins team. The Patriots ran the ball a whopping 42 times against the Dolphins, with Cam Newton leading the Patriots with 15 rushing attempts. Newton of course is an outstanding runner, but with his injury history it would seem ill advised to subject him to that amount of punishment on a weekly basis.
A Patriots team that runs the ball all day against a Seahawks team that relies on the passing game of Russell Wilson - my how times have changed in the NFL.
It’s the Patriots and the Seahawks in an intriguing week 2 matchup on Sunday Night Football.
