Recapping this week in stats for the Falcons.
20-0. That’s the lead the Atlanta Falcons had at one point in their epic loss to the Dallas Cowboys this past Sunday. Thankfully, week 2 is now behind us, an This series will discuss everything stats for the week, including and we can turn our attention to week 3. Before we do that, let’s review where the Falcons stack up in regards to records, seasonal stats leaders, etc. We won’t be diving deep into the analytical side of the numbers put up, but more of a broad outlook on weekly and seasonal stats so we can keep track of milestones and where this team stands with league leaders.
Falcons make NFL history in embarrassing fashion
I don’t know what more the offense could’ve done. Sure there were mistakes made, but that’s typical in the NFL. There were no turnovers by the Falcons’ offense, which is typically a recipe for success. Unfortunately, the Falcons were the exception to that normality.
According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the Falcons are the first NFL team since 1933 to lose a game despite scoring 39 points and having 0 turnovers. Up until Sunday, teams had been 440-0.
Julio Jones ties Roddy White for franchise record in receptions
Although Jones had a terrible day, one in which he dropped a perfectly thrown touchdown pass that in hindsight would’ve sealed the game, he did make franchise history. With his two receptions against the Cowboys, Jones is now tied with former wide receiver Roddy White for the most receptions in franchise history with 808. What makes it even more impressive is it took Jones 109 fewer targets to reach this feat, and he currently has 1,443 yards more yards than White.
Calvin Ridley has his 4th career multi-touchdown game
It’s difficult even in defeat to not be impressed by Calvin Ridley. He continues to be one of the bright spots on this Falcons team that constantly lets so many people down. Ridley scored twice against the Cowboys, which marks the 4th time he’s had multiple touchdowns in a game. Interestingly enough, two of those games have come in 2020. The other two games came in 2018 against the New Orleans Saints in week 3 and week 4 against the Cincinnati Bengals. He now has an impressive 21 touchdowns in 31 career games.
Only 7 touchdowns away from another franchise record
This record could technically not happen this year, but it remains as something interesting to monitor throughout the season. Julio Jones needs 7 touchdown receptions to pass Roddy White for the franchise record in receiving touchdowns. Jones currently sits at 57 while White holds the record of 63.
League-wide
Similar to last week, quarterback Matt Ryan still leads the NFL in passes completed with 61. It’s not necessarily a statistic you want to see, as Ryan finished 2019 as the NFL’s leading passer in completions with 408. At the present time, Ryan is on path to have 488 completions — which is far too many. Ryan is also currently in 2nd with for touchdown passes (6) and passing yardage (723).
The only other notable performance so far comes from Calvin Ridley. Ridley currently leads the NFL in both receiving touchdowns with 4 and first down receptions with 16. He also finds himself tied with Buffalo Bills wide receiver Stefon Diggs for most receiving yards with 239.
