The moment has finally come for Drew Lock to prove he’s the real deal

NFL: Detroit Lions at Denver Broncos Ron Chenoy-USA TODAY Sports

We got a taste from the five Broncos games last season. The hope is that most of the dishes we’re about to experience are amazing and leave us wanting more.

Good morning, Broncos Country! Happy NFL Sunday

The time for talk is over.

We got a taste with the first five games, but we’re about to get the full menu. The hope is that most of the dishes we’re about to experience are amazing and leave us wanting more.

Is Drew Lock the quarterback of the future for the Denver Broncos? Most of Broncos Country and the franchise certainly hope and think so, but we’re about to find out. That’s perhaps the biggest question as the Broncos open the 2020 season on Monday against the Tennessee Titans.

What adds to the uncertainty of this wild 2020 is Lock and Denver have yet to get on the field against another opponent. In normal years, the Broncos would have already played at least four preseason games. They would have had the chance to iron out the kinks and get in “game” shape for the opening of the season. Lock also would have had the chance to work with his new assortment of offensive toys and get a feel for Pat Shurmur in game-like situations.

But 2020 is no normal year.

So when Lock takes the field on Monday Night Football, Tennessee is the first team he will do all of the above against. There are bound to be hiccups and struggles, but Denver needs to limit them.

On the MHR Radio Podcast, I told Adam Malnati the key to the game is for the Broncos to start strong. Whether it’s on offense or defense, Denver needs to punch the Titans in the proverbial mouth. If the offense gets the ball first, my hope is Shurmur calls a deep pass to Jerry Jeudy. Get the blood flowing right away and send a message. Get the rookie receiver involved in the offense from the start. More often than not with Jeudy, good things will happen. At the very least, Denver will get a defensive pass interference penalty.

For the Broncos to get over the predicted 7.5 wins that sportsbooks have them at, Lock must deliver the goods. When I recently talked with Johnny Avello, the DraftKings sportsbook director of operations, he told me when he puts odds together for NFL teams, it’s all about the quarterback. It’s also why he’s not yet sold on Lock and Denver just yet.

As Avello said:

“My first thought is usually ‘How much experience does he have? And can he perform in the NFL?’ That’s the first thing I look at. And the Broncos really ended the season well last year, so to me, that makes a difference on where I think they’re going to go this year. They did pretty good in the draft, but sometimes those new players make an impact and sometimes they don’t. Lock, to me, he’s the guy that’s going to make it happen or it’s not going to happen.”

The time for talk is over.

We’re about to find out what the Broncos have in Lock.

I have a strong sense we’re about to experience some awesome dishes that leave us wanting more.
