TNF: Chiefs vs Texans Game Thread

Thursday Night Football, Week 1 . Football is back baby! After a long, long offseason featuring a global pandemic, an economic shutdown, and no major sports for what felt like an eternity, the NFL returns with a vengeance. Tonight Deshaun Watson and the Houston Texans travel north to take on Patrick Mahomes and the defending Super Bowl Champion Kansas City Chiefs in a matchup of two of the best young quarterbacks in the NFL.

The Chiefs and the Texans split a pair of games last season, both in Kansas City, with the Texans taking the regular season matchup and the Chiefs turning the tables on the Texans in the playoffs.

The Texans come into this season after a tumultuous offseason which featured a trade of All World receiver Deandre Hopkins to the Cardinals in exchange for washed up running back David Johnson, a second round draft pick, a swap of fourth round picks, and a slightly used Duffy Dyer baseball card. Word is that Johnson, a running back who hasn’t produced since 2016, was the key to the trade for the Texans. Some things just can’t be explained. Nonetheless, the Texans still feature a great quarterback in Watson and a couple of very fast receivers in Brandin Cooks and Will Fuller, who should put some pressure on the Chiefs defensive backfield.

The Chiefs answer with an embarrassment of riches on offense. In addition to future Hall of Fame quarterback Patrick Mahomes, the Chiefs have future Hall of Fame tight end Travis Kelce, burners Tyreek Hill, Sammy Watkins and Mecole Hardman, and their shiny new toy, rookie running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire. Stopping this Chiefs offense, or even slowing it down most games, will be a challenge for the best of NFL defenses. On the bright side for the Texans, the Chiefs are starting former Jet Kelechi Osemele at guard, so there should be opportunities for the Texans to bring the heat against Patrick Mahomes.

It’s the Chiefs and the Texans in a matchup of quarterback prodigies, a great way to kickoff the NFL season on Thurday Night Football. Enjoy the game everybody.
