TNF: Jaguars vs Dolphins Game Thread

NFL: Preseason-Jacksonville Jaguars at Miami Dolphins Jasen Vinlove-USA TODAY Sports

Thursday Night Football, Week 3 . Tonight the Miami Dolphins pay a visit to their Florida rivals, the Jacksonville Jaguars, in a matchup of two teams expected to go nowhere before the season began. Must see TV this is not, at least outside of the state of Florida. A week from today the Jets get their turn at being the not ready for prime time players on National TV against the Broncos. Thursday Night Football isn’t exactly getting the cream of the crop games this year.

The Dolphins come into this game off a tough 31-28 loss to the Buffalo Bills. Dolphins quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick has been up to his usual tricks, good one week, bad the next. Fitzpatrick threw up a stinker of a performance against the Patriots on opening day, committing three turnovers in a blowout loss. He followed that up with an outstanding turnover free performance against the Bills where he threw for more than 300 yards against a very tough Bills pass defense. You just never know what you’re going to get from Fitzpatrick. Fitzpatrick isn’t getting much help from the rest of the Dolphins team. The team ranks 27th in the NFL in rushing offense, 26th in rushing defense, 29th in pass defense and 30th in overall defense. Not exactly the kind of numbers the Dolphins anticipated when they went on a free agent spending binge this past offseason. Tight end Mike Gesicki has gotten off to a great start with 160 yards in two games, and running back Myles Gaskin has surprised with some decent running, but so far there is little else to cheer about in Miami.

The Jaguars surprised the Colts on opening day with a 27-20 victory in which the Jaguars were dominated in every category except turnovers and the final score. The Colts put up 200 more yards of offense than the Jaguars, but Gardner Minshew’s timely passing and the Jaguars defense’s two turnovers sealed a win. The Jaguars were not so fortunate in week 2, falling to the Titans in a 33-30 heartbreaker in which the Jaguars flipped the script, dominating the Titans in yards gained but losing the battle of the turnovers and coming up short in the final score.

Titans quarterback Gardner Minshew has gotten off to a hot start, with six touchdown passes and a 116 passer rating after two games. Minshew will be missing a favorite target tonight as his leading receiver, D.J. Chark, has been ruled out for the game with an injury. Keelan Cole and rookie Laviska Shenault will have to step in in place of the injured Chark.

It’s the Jaguars and the Dolphins in a Florida showdown on Thursday Night Football. Enjoy the game everybody.
