Two unexpected Chiefs rookies to make their debut against Texans

There are some surprises on the inactives list before the Chiefs-Texans game.

The Kansas City Chiefs have released their list of inactive players before Thursday night’s game against the Houston Texans that will open the NFL season.

Here are the Chiefs’ inactives tonight vs. Houston:

TE Ricky Seals-Jones

All Chiefs players were listed as healthy in the final injury report on Wednesday, so all of these players should be considered healthy scratches for the game.

This means fifth-round rookie defensive tackle Mike Danna and undrafted rookie defensive tackle Tershawn Wharton — along with third-year tight end Nick Keizer — will all make their NFL debuts on Thursday night. It’s a bit of a surprise that fourth-year veteran Taco Charlton — a former first-round pick — will miss the game.

It also means that tight end Deon Yelder — who missed every padded practice of training camp — will be available to play, while veteran Ricky Seals-Jones will be in street clothes. This could suggest that when defensive tackle Mike Pennel’s suspension is lifted after next week’s game, Seals-Jones could be expendable.

The Texans — who had activated practice-squad running back Scottie Phillips to the roster earlier on Thursday — made just five players inactive, taking advantage of a new rule adopted with the 2020 NFL Collective Bargaining Agreement.

The big story here is that wide receiver Brandin Cooks — listed as questionable on the Texans’ last injury report — will be available to play. Also note rookie offensive tackle Charlie Heck. He will not play against the Chiefs — for whom his father Andy Heck serves as offensive line coach.
