A couple of moves before Sunday

On Saturday, the Minnesota Vikings made a roster move that finally gives them a safety on the roster to back up Harrison Smith and Anthony Harris.

The team has announced that they have added Nate Meadors to the 53-man roster from the practice squad. They have also elevated linebacker Hardy Nickerson for Sunday’s contest.

Meadors made a bit of a splash in the 2019 preseason with a pick-six at the Superdome against the New Orleans Saints. He played cornerback in the limited action he had in 2019, but has been working at safety this past offseason. The team did not have to make a corresponding move to add him, as he fills the spot that was opened when the team placed Danielle Hunter on IR back on Wednesday.

In adding Nickerson to the active roster, the team is taking advantage of one of the new rules for practice squad players this season. That rule, which we’ve mentioned previously, allows a team to “elevate” a player from the practice squad to the active roster without subjecting them to the waiver process first.

What this means is that, after Sunday’s game is over, Nickerson will go back to being on the practice squad. Teams are allowed to do this twice over the course of the season with each of their practice squad players. If a team wants to bring a player up a third time, they have to subject him to the waiver process before he can be placed on the practice squad again.

We’re getting ever closer to kickoff for this one, ladies and gentlemen. We’ll have anything that breaks between now and then right here for you to check out.
