49ers bring in quarterbacks for workout, unlikely to sign any

It’s C.J. Beathard and Nick Mullens for the foreseeable future.

The San Francisco 49ers had a players’ day off on Tuesday, but head coach Kyle Shanahan and his coaching staff were plenty busy. Aside from preparing for their Week 4 matchup with the Los Angeles Chargers, Shanahan & Co. were working out quarterbacks. Following Jimmy Garoppolo’s torn ACL, the team worked out a group of journeyman quarterbacks that include Kellen Clemens, Tom Savage, Landry Jones, Matt Simms, T.J. Yates, and Kyle Allen (per Jordan Schultz), among others. The team gave Matt Moore a call, but he is electing to remain retired.

As I was just set to publish this, I came across this list of quarterbacks the team worked out.

The 49ers return to practice on Wednesday, and it sounds like they will stick with C.J. Beathard as their starter and Nick Mullens as the backup. In spite of all the workouts, the team is unlikely to sign another quarterback to the 53-man roster, according to Jordan Schultz.

Mullens is currently on the practice squad, and will likely be promoted on Saturday before the 1 p.m. PT roster deadline. That will leave three open spots on the practice squad. The Houston Texans signed defensive end Daeshon Hall off the 49ers practice squad on Tuesday, and the 49ers promoted Tyvis Powell from the practice last weekend to replace the injured Jaquiski Tartt. More than likely they will sign a quarterback for one of those three spots.

Kyle Shanahan will meet with the media on Wednesday, at which point he should be able to confirm the reports we’ve heard on Tuesday. In the meantime, it would appear to be C.J. Beathard and Nick Mullens getting the opportunity moving forward. Given the pu pu platter of mediocre quarterbacks the team is working out, I can live with that.
