The Chiefs open up Arrowhead Stadium against the San Francisco 49ers.
The Kansas City Chiefs open up Arrowhead Stadium for the first time in 2018 as they welcome the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday at Noon Arrowhead Time.
Chiefs defensive coordinator Bob Sutton on the 49ers offense
“Well obviously you know they’re running the ball really well. 190 yard last week. They lost (Jerick) McKinnon early, but I think (Matt) Breida has turned to be probably a great thing for them, unfortunately. He’s got legitimate speed; he adds that dimension of play-making ability to their offense, and Kyle [Shanahan’s] system, which, his dad (Mike) has been involved with—it’s been a really good system of football. It’s based on the zone-run, as you guys know—one cut, take it up field. Then all the play-action passes. The boots and that all kind of come off that deal—tries to slow down linebackers, edges, all those things, and they tie it up like that. It’s a really good system. It’s pretty fast-paced. A lot of shifts and motions and that type of thing, but they got a good football team. They got some speed, obviously, with (Marquise) Goodwin out there and that type of thing. They got a lot of little guys that play roles really good on offense. It’s obviously going to be a big challenge. They try to keep the off-balance. Run-pass, run-pass—mixing that and they do a really good job of that, I think.”
Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy on the 49ers defense
“Stout up front. (Arik) Armstead, (DeForest) Buckner who I have seen personally when I was at Colorado, they kind of destroyed us, those two big boys. They have the young kid Solomon Thomas from Stanford. I don’t want to take anything away form (Earl) Mitchell, the nose, he is a hell of a player as well. You have Reuben Foster coming back along in conjunction with Malcolm Smith. You have Richard Sherman out there on the perimeter. It is a shame, I can’t think of the safety’s name, number 29 (Jaquiski Tartt). Big enforcer. He does a great job in the run game and can run. Number 27 (Adrian Colbert), the deep safety, does a hell of a job. Overall, they are a very good team. And also, they have another young kid out there. I know he has had his struggles, the kid from Colorado University (Ahkello Witherspoon). He is a tremendous talent. Each and every week presents a different type challenge. At the end of the day, it is not about the opponent. It is about who we are and what we do.”
