Efe Obada and Donte Jackson shine as Panthers outlast Bengals 31-21

The Panthers enter their bye week with a 2-1 record thanks to a win against the Bengals.

The Panthers came into today’s game without a lot of expectations. The Bengals were 2-0 coming into today’s matchup and on paper had an advantage on both offense and defense. The Bengals front four were supposed to feast on the Panthers’ patchwork offensive line, and the Panthers defense wasn’t expected to do much against the duo of Andy Dalton and A.J. Green.

But that’s why they play the games.

Christian McCaffrey was simply an unstoppable machine today, racking up 184 rushing yards on 28 carries (That’s 6.6 yards per carry!) as he carved up the Bengals defenders like a hot knife through butter all afternoon. Cam Newton was his usual self—beating the defense through the air and on the ground by completing 15-of-24 passes for 150 yards and two touchdowns while also rushing for two scores. Devin Funchess caught four passes today, and Jarius Wright made his one reception count by being Mr. Dependable on third down.

There were some shaky moments on defense, particularly in the secondary when Tyler Boyd was allowed to be wide open on several occasions, but those hiccups were counterbalanced by outstanding performances from cornerback Donte Jackson and defensive end Efe Obada. Jackson pick up his second and third career interceptions today, and Obada grabbed his first interception and first sack. Obada—a guy who only learned what football is less around five years ago—proved to the coaching staff today that he deserves more playing time going forward.

The Panthers head into the bye week with a 2-1 record and should be confident in their ability to compete with anyone after today’s performance.
