Jimmy Garoppolo out for the season with torn ACL

Trying to lead the San Francisco 49ers to an unlikely comeback against the red-hot Kansas City Chiefs, quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo ended up being carted off the field in the 4th quarter. While during live action it appeared as if a big hit to his throwing shoulder while along the sidelines was the injury, it was in fact his left knee, and Peter Schrager’s report during the NFL on FOX broadcast sounded as if Jimmy G was seriously hurt.

Unfortunately for Garoppolo and for Niners fans, it is indeed the worst case scenario, and his season is officially over.

Second-year quarterback C.J. Beathard is Garoppolo’s replacement, and he was pretty awful as a rookie. Unless he can show significant improvement after completing just 55% of his passes and throwing six interceptions to four touchdowns in 2017, Garoppolo’s injury effectively doubles as the hammer blow for San Francisco’s ambitions of a playoff push. Things had already gotten off to a bad start with starting RB Jerick McKinnon lost to a torn ACL just before Week 1, and now their franchise QB won’t be back until 2019.

The 49ers are currently 1-2 after losing 38-27 in Kansas City, and they still have to play at the Los Angeles Chargers, Green Bay Packers, and host the Los Angeles Rams before the bye week. A promising season for Seattle’s NFC West rivals has gone south quickly.
